Hi can anyone tell me when Ferrari started painting the engine Block red my Mondial QV has not had this from 82. My engine bay is as pictured..With a picture of archive Mondial bay in red . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't think valve covers were red on any on the Mondials. Lots of owners powder coat them when changing gaskets.
My early 1983 QV (45157) has a black plenum and just says Ferrari, not Quattrovalvole. I heard they used up all the Mondial 8 parts before fitting the red plenums. The car also has Mondial 8 door cards and rear seat arm-rest with the elasticated pockets but the centre console and steering wheel are QV. Mauro
Mauro that's interesting and believable. But I think the centre console was a necessary change due to the updated AC and heating system, whose controls weren't compatible with the 8's console.
My plenum is black (or should say was black, most of the paint is gone. When I get update that gasket, I'll get it powder coated. I was thinking of keeping it black to keep it original ,but do other mondial 8 owners paint it red?
My black plenum has now lost almost all its paint but if the opportunity presents itself I'll put it back to black. Afterburner, my car has 2 mirrors.
Wasn't it black for the Swiss market? I have seen 2 Mondials with black headers and they were both initially sold in Switzerland
I think all the Mondial 8s have black plenums and the early QVs also, until they changed to red from about April 1983, as far as I can tell. I don't know if black continued on the Swiss spec models. I don't have access now but I seem to remember seeing a list of Mondial production with a few Mondial 8s for various markets (Australia possibly) built later than my QV. So it wasn't a clean break from Mondial 8s to QVs as you might expect.
My 1957 mercedes had NO side mirrors My 1980 VW Rabbit had NO passenger side mirror My 1976 Porsche 911 has both mirrors My 1982 Ferrari Mondial 8 has both mirrors Funny, I just learned in NJ you are not required as of today to have a passenger side mirror provided you have a center rearview mirror. In 1965 they required a driver side mirror and center mirror. That explains why my 1980 Rabbit only had 1 sideview mirror and my mercedes has none.
Re mirrors: The basic European rule is a minimum of 2 mirrors - either external driver side plus centre internal OR 2 externals (panel vans, loaded station wagons). Re plenums: I think the color was linked to the shape, and there was a cross-over from 8 to QV where 8 plenums were fitted to early QVs. I have never seen an original 8 plenum in red, I think they were all red.
