    Sometimes one thread begets another.....

    I removed all the relays from my '84 Mondial which isn't starting, figured I'd clean them up and re-install them per the wiring diagram which I have. Silly me.

    I created some interesting new problems (i.e. starter runs continuously with ignition turned to "on"). I suppose this means I need to test and replace them, not just clean the copntacts.

    But the big problem: There is an "I" slot for a relay on the fuse box, no corresponding "I" relay listed in the manual.

    And, amidst mostly Bosch *113 and *101 relays, I have ONE Bosch *012 relay. And I didn't note which slot it came out of, and according to the manual none of the relays are supposed to be this one.

    So I have an empty "I" slot. Anything supposed to go there?

    And I have a homeless *012 relay. Is this something which was substituted at a later time and doesn't show up on the original wiring diagram Maybe it's supposed to be the starter relay?

    I’m sure by now, you realize the magnitude of your mistake, but not all is lost. First, you would think all Mondials of the same vintage would be wired the same, they are not… GB, AU, Swiss and the US models have different wiring, and relay locations. It’s somewhat helpful to know what country your car was slated to ship to, but not 100% guaranteed you will find the correct relay information. If modifications have been made, you can also have unique relay locations which you will not find in the Owners manual.

    Depending on what your end goal is, you may want to replace the old relays with new ones, they are fairly inexpensive, and you would have the extra insurance knowing that you are making a good electrical contact which if your not can cause many other problems.

    The owner’s manual is a good place to start, towards the back; there is an electrical section which covers the relay locations (pg. 101?) All Mondials from that vintage use three different Bosch relays (101,113,106)

    Locations are most likely as follows

    B, C, D, E should be a 101
    F, G, H, I, L, M should be a 113
    N is a 101
    O is a 006 or 113
    T is a 101
    U is a 113
    S is a 101
    R, P is a 113
    Q is a 106 or 113

    Because the relays look similar, I have found it easier to use a sharpie and mark each one with the above 3 number code after you have positively identified them.

    Wire brush and stablient 22 is a Mondial owner’s best friend.

    Yes, this is what is shown on my diagram, confirmed both on the US and Aussie versions just downloaded from the Ferrari site.

    I swapped a 101 for a 113 in the S slot which at least got rid of the starter motor continuously running.

    The *012 relay is a complicated beast, looks like some kind of DP/DT, nothing like the circuit diagrams on the rest of them.

    Looks like another $1500 down the drain.........................

    (Add: looks like 012 and 006 are the same)

    It’s possible the 012 and 006 are internally the same, Bosch manufactures automotive style and marine style relays which electrically are similar but have different numbers and I believe different style contacts.

    What I did to fix my wiring / relay bird nest, was to isolate each circuit, and turn every electrical device which was connected to that circuit on and off. After determining which relay was correct for that position, it was identified and removed so the next circuit could be tested without interference. After determining the correct relay locations for this car, I started hunting down the intermittent gremlins; starter, no dash dimmer pot, only one headlight popping up, rear lights in the wrong locations, no heater / AC, slow windows, Etc... The only problem left is the dash dimmer circuit; I purchased new transistors and other circuit components, but need to find a good electronics person to do the work.
