I can move my shift lever into Reverse and 1st gears but the car remains in neutral. I can still select 2nd thru 5th gears so I think my problem is the gear selector mechanism inside the gearbox. (Note: I checked to ensure that the external shaft is moving and trying to select the appropriate gear to convince myself that the problem is inside the gearbox).

Has anyone encountered this problem in either a Mondial (mine is a 1988 3.2) or a 328? Can you effect a fix with the engine still in the car (by dropping the gear case cover)?

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

While this has not happened to me, I've heard of the shift rod going out of alignment, which can be fixed with the engine/transaxle still in the car.
Definitely needs an experienced hand to look at it.
    Good luck!

The best thing to do is take of the oilcover from gearbox. Be carefull with the 3 springs and balls on left side, they jump all over the place. Once the cover of, you will see what is the problem.Probebly the fork is out of alignment....and easy to fix.

First - thank you for the warning about the springs and balls - I was very careful removing the gearbox oil cover and was able to reach in and remove the springs and balls before they fell out.

I was also able to determine what the problem was once I could observe what was happening when trying to select gears - believe it or not, the problem was that my SHIFT GATE WAS LOOSE allowing the shift fork to move too far and thus fail to engage the gear selector.

So, what should have taken about 30 seconds to remedy (tighten the 2 screws holding the shift gate) has taken me about 3 hours.

Hope this info helps somebody in the future.

    Regards and thanks.
