Has anyone removed the Mondial side intake grilles? It may improve appearance without the "egg crates", but I cannot find a photo with grilles removed.

no pics, but they are easy to take on and off -
when off, there are the little slots left at the front of each strake that they hook into.
It is a pretty big opening with the grill mesh exposed.

I am trying to get my side grates off to give the car a good polishing and waxing, but I can't seem to get the darn things off. I can only find one screw per side, the obvious one in the upper rear corner of each grille. After removing these the rear part of each grille is loose, but it still won't come out. Can someone tell me where the other two screws are located? Thanks!

    Nathan,

That's because you have an Earily Mondial-8 like me. The side strakes don't slide foreward like the Cab's and QV's....! (The Strakes are also cast Aluminum and not Plastic...)

You have to remove the rear internal leather trim panels and remove the clips.

    good luck,

    Edwardo

Thanks guys. I do not know what I would do without FChat! I did have one question. In the other thread referenced, smg2 said this:

"same deal on the `81. although mine are cast aluminum and VERY fragile. once off be carefull where you rest them. the rest of the assymebly comes out from inside the engine bay and requires removal of the oil cooler on the driver side and the A/C and coolant hose on the passenger side. i take mine off once a month to wax and clean."

Is "the rest of the assembly" talking about the inner scoops that direct the air where it needs to go and NOT the external grilles? I really do not want to have to remove my oil cooler and AC compressor just to make waxing easier. All I need to remove is the external "cheese graters". I am about to go out and try removing the rear leather and see what I can find.

Strakes have only one screw inside, on top, in the back.

The other stuff,,,, Yes, thats the internal air ducting.
(Left side, Oil cooler. Right side, Engine intake and Fwd header cooling air..)

We are here for ya brother.
    We love these cars.!

I got the grilles off. I will go ahead and list a little how-to in step by step format for when the next person comes along looking to remove their grilles.

    1) Remove rear seat bottom cushions. These should just pop off if you pull upwards.

    2) Remove rear seat backs. There is one bolt at the bottom of the cusion you have to remove, then just pull the seat upwards and it will unclip the top bracket.

    3) Once the seat back is out of the way, it will expose a small screw that is holding on the strip of leather side trim. Unscrew this screw, then push the other end of the trim piece towards the back of the car, and it will slip out.

    4) Once that is removed, you can see all 6 mounting studs for the strakes on the side grille. On my car they were actually tiny threaded studs with a small nut holding them to the car. Other people have reported having clips. Just make sure you have clips and not threaded nuts before you go trying to pry them off. Unscrew the nut for each strake, and you can use the mounting stud to GENTLY press each strake out away from the car.

    5) Unscrew the large mounting screw on the outside of the car. This is located on the upper rear corner of the side grille.

    6) Remove grilles, and get to polishing! The whole thing takes about 5 minutes per side, if you can actually locate a working flashlight and find your small phillips-head screwdriver.

    7) Like every good shop manual and your momma always said, assembly is the reverse of disassembly.
