I've got the same problem! Seriously, how do you open the sunroof when the motor works fine but it doesn't open? You have to open the sunroof to get at the mechanisms.

Obviously, either the drive cable is broken or the puller device. I saw replacement pullers offered once but cannot find them again. So, unless you can get the roof open, you cannot fix it.

My mechanic worked on mine a while back, and it was a long process. He had to remove all the headliner and trim to have access to it.

    1) remove the boot liner on the rear left boot side to expose the sunroof motor.
    2) at the bottom of the brass tube there is a bolt cap. Remove it.
    3) remove the plastic cover (looks like a cone) on the side of the motor
    4) turn the bolt anti-clockwise by wrench manually (will take a whole lot of time) until the sunroof is fully retracted
    5) remove the chromed rails on the side of the sunroof cut-out. They are held in place by a screw at the forward end. You then need to "pull" them towards the front.
    6) remove the wind deflector, by unscrewing the little plastic holders at the base of the springs and wiggling them out of the sliders (very easy but fragile)
    7) pull the sunroof forward by hand - it should disengage and slide forward.
    8) as soon as the front "skates" fit in the rail cut-out, gently lift the front out, being careful not to scrape the sunroof against the cut-out and scratch the paint
    9) continue to pull it out until the rear "skates" fit through their respective cutouts then pull it free

FYI. The cable will probably be stripped and will need replacement. Ferrari will want over $2000 for it. If the motor is damaged it will cost you a similar bomb. I have bought the whole mechanism with the same motor and cable from a scrap dealer for $100. It is the same as was used by porsche for the late 80's/early 90's 928... Go figure.

If you need to replace the cable and guides, PM me and I can walk you through it...

What? This is the first I've heard of Porsche sunroof parts fitting the Mondial.
Do you have an exact model year 928 and/or part number I should look for with the motor and cable if I want to repair my sunroof?

Nope, that would have been ineffective. And I agree, a long process. But useless; there is no access to anything useful from the cabin side that would be revealed by removed the headliner.

You will have to operate = rotate the release mechanism accessing it from the gap between the headliner and the sun roof trim. You need to push the assembly inside the rail (not shown here) back to pull inward both attached arms, therefore pulling in the rear feet and lowering the roof. Then you can push it back by hand. Swearing helps. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Here with the release slider pulled/pushed by the motor

You can use a welding rod as I did to push it back after you clear the path of the cable in the trunk = remove the end cap on the cable passage of the motor and remove the cable by pressing the open button:

Sometimes the white nylon bobbin breaks and fall off. You cannot buy as a separate part so i make these if stuck.
If you really get stuck where you cannot get to the cable , you can cut an access hole in the underside of the roof. Then replace the cut out piece

It should cross reference to the 944 also. First year around 1985 or so. That is where I got the parts from when I had the sunroof pulled years ago to replace all of the plastic. Still is tempermental, so since it doesn't leak, I leave it closed.

Interestingly, the mechanism is similar to what MB used in their cars of that vintage, but MB had an extra guide to make moving the roof much smoother (according to my tech who is a trained MB tech with about 40 years of experience).

    Regards,
    Jerry
