IF NOT a general question and mods want to move it to 348 / Mondial section [prefer the 348 for this one] then so be. However, it seems a more general question to me as due to location of noise.

    Background [might have some influence]:

Last week, my environmental 'OFF' button in the Mondial T will NOT cut off the fan or whatever temperature control was/is selected. Annoying. I believe it is just a contact item on that 'OFF' button and can be easily addressed. Since when I select temp./AC or defrost, they work as expected. The fan speed and temp control work fine too. EVEN when I can't shut the 'OFF' button. anyway.

    Today:

Starts up fine, drives FINE. No problems with engine noise etc. EXCEPT===> see question below

    Question:

There developed this morning a 'click', in the top side/cam-cover area. It is regular. Was thinking about 10 seconds, no matter if Idle, or at 60 [ya' I can hear it as top is down and that loud]. After this morning's 40 min. commute to work, the sound was more like every 5-6 seconds.

Since this is not Car Talk the best description I have is it sounds like, for those of you who know, the same volume, duration, and such as the click one hears when depressing the switch for releasing either the hood, trunk or engine bay cover..ya' know that 'solenoid' like sound..click. Matter of fact thought that was what was happening, but all is secure and no warning lights on.

When I pulled over, lifted the engine bay cover, I could distinctly hear in [thinking] passenger's side cover area. I was wondering what could be making such a noise at any RPM that might either be, what, motronics operated?, or some other mech, in there that needs sensing? Can't think of anything.

appreciate any responses and if in wrong area, sorry.

welp...on way to lunch and to get gas, decided to pop front, remove 20amp fuse to AC and clicking stopped, so, it is related to the AC, but why in top cam area, I don't know...perhaps it's just the way sound travels.

But did put ear real close to that cover and, could swear it was there.

r -- PS, thanks mods for moving to 348

The click you are hearing is the electromagnetic clutch engaging the AC compressor on and off. When you disconnect the AV 20A fuse, you break the circuit and disconnect it. It is just the same kind of system as a solenoid and so sounds just like the boot/bonnet/engine cover releases.

The AC compressor is in the forward right bottom corner of the engine, and the sound of the click will bounce off the fuel tank to sound like it comes from the forward side of the engine around where the cam sprockets are.

When the AC controls in the Mondial is in other than the "off" position the fan will run at a minimum speed and all the controls are active.

So at this point, the best thing for you to do is take the center console off and disconnect the two wire groups going into the AC control. If that stops the fan and AC compressor then the unit is the problem (most probable)...

It is the same one as in the Mondial QV and 32. I saw one on ebay for GBP 60 a couple of weeks back and believe it was also used by some alfa's and Lancias of the 82-93 era.
