I have a 1991 T and the red battery light comes on at 4,000 rpm's breifly when there is not much electrical load on the car. The alternator is only producing around 12.2 volts when the car is under heavy load with the headlights and a/c running. The battery is a new optima and the connections are good. Has anyone experienced this problem? I am thinking it is time for an alternator. The car has 38,000 miles.

If the battery light is on, beware. As you suspect, the alternator could be on its way out.

My battery light had been coming on every now and then; and before I knew it, my car died on a minor highway as my alternator took a crap on me.

I have a rebuilt (as new) Delco alternator for the Mondial t available, but seeing that your car is a 1991 model you likely have the Nippondenso unit.

as one who's repaired his alternator three (3) times (the last time it had only 50 miles on it after a rebuild), if you see your battery light come on at *any* point after the initial start up procedure, no matter how quick, it will crap out on you, and in the most inconvenient place (not close to home).

Unless you address this now, while your car is still running, you'll be having it flatbeded to a repair facility.
