Just starting to toy around in my month old '91 Mondial T. I have fixed a number of small items (horn, washer fluid spray, parking break, side mirror), but have a check engine light on (1/4). I heard this could be an oxygen sensor (which is relatively easy to replace), but might be other electronics. I also have been getting a "slow down 5/8" light at times (ususally goes off in 1-2 minutes). I wanted to get a diagnostics computer to pull error codes, but haven't been able to find any for my car. How do you guys figure out which component is problematic if not using a code reader? I posted in the Mondial Section and they suggested that since the engine is similar to the 348 I should post here. Thanks.

Bruce (loving my Mondial more every day)

As far as I know, the Mondial T uses the same system as the 348, which does not require a code reader, it uses a self-diagnosis feature built into the Motronic ECU computers, and a system of blinking lights engaged via the pushbutton. You should be able to read up on the procedure and the codes here in the archives.

The "check engine" lights indicate that something in the ignition/injection system is outside of the normal operating range.

The "slow down" lights indicate that the catalytic converters are overheating. Possibly a false signal, but should be taken seriously until things are checked out.
