I have tried to find the number but cannot figure it out. Anyone know how many coupes had the clutchless layout?

They all had clutches that were computer controlled.

That ends a long info search for me.
I guess Ferrari decided to place the handful of Valeos into just the cabriolets after all.

Rob, ALL Mondials have clutches, even the valeos. As Rifledriver said, the valeos have computer controlled clutches.

Now, as to whether any coupes were fitted with these, this remains a mystery. Keith Blummels book "The Original Ferrari V8" does not have any indication regarding this. I would suggest though that they would be VERY rare in the US. With only 43 of the 840 t coupes made worldwide getting to the US, I'd guess and say that there aren't any here.

It would be interesting to know what the worldwide count of valeos is. The split between worldwide coupes and cabriolets would be also very interesting.

All US T coupes are 89s, which predate the Valeo

How did that thing work? Did you move a shift lever like the regular cars?

Pretty much. There are sensors on the gear shifter that as you apply pressure to the stick, it disengages the clutch. Hank can provide all the precise details, but apparently if you are cruising and rest your hand on the stick, then the clutch can disengage :)

I suppose that means all 30 the the US were cabrios since all Mondial t coupes in the US were 1989s. Still wonder how many Valeo t coupes out there worldwide.

The clutch operates when the shift lever passes into or through neutral only. Touching or even holding the stick in any way will not operate the clutch. I believe someone described a Porche trans. that they had driven would do that that in a recent thread on the F-40 that was fitted with the valeo.
