Searched the archives, thought I'd just post.

I drive my car about once every 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, battery is turned off to prevent drain.

Now, when I start it and let it idle, what happens is the car starts fine, hits idle, then seems to do a few things. 1) Sometimes sounds like it's struggling to stay at idle/avoid dying; 2) weird back pressure sounds out of the tail pipes (burbling pops, but not backfire, just low 'poofs').

I'll take it out after letting it warm up, drive it, seems to drive ok (although once in a while seems to have a pause when I accelerate for a split second). But when I come to a stop, regardless of in gear or neutral, mild stop or hard stop, the engine wants to (and will) die/shut off. It struggles to idle at a stop.

So I'll drive it for a while, then, go park at my destination. Now you think that what I've said is quirky, it gets weirder - regardless if I park for 5 minutes or 5 hours, when I get back in to drive, it not only starts back up, but does NONE of the above. Doesn't struggle to stay lit, doesn't have the back popping noise, doesn't die when I come to a stop.

    I'm stumped...

I believe that disconnecting the battery is causing the ECUs to relearn the warm up procedure evetry time. I'd suggest getting anbattery tender (see other thread on this topic) and leaving the power connected. When you reapply power to the ECUs you need to start the car and just let it sit there at idle until it is at temperature. I suspect this may be the cause of your problem. Another possibility is that you have dirty connectors somewhere. Stabilant 22 is always good here....

I am sure others more knowledgeable will advise, but if it were me, I'd start with a battery tender....

David is on the right track. Let car idle on battery reconnect for 10 mins with no accessories on. This allows ECU ro set learned block memory specifc to your car. Then go drive and everything will be happy. If too lazy do what david says keep the battery on and use a tender.

Your car has self-adaptive learning. You are erasing that memory each time that you disconnect the battery.

...and then your car runs with a quirk.

Well, call me weird but I'd think that your car is eventually "learning" what to change in order to keep her running right...which to me says that the car is correcting for a problem.

Motronic 2.5 and 2.7 can correct ignition timing, coil charge time, and fuel/air mixture, among other things.

As components age/wear on our car, they send slightly different signals or behave a little differently mechanically, so it makes sense for the computers to be able to adapt.

If you stop erasing the computer memory, then your computers will be able to tune your car (certainly for now), but of course as cars wear/age you are eventually going to have to fix/replace *something*.

No big deal, though. Everything on your car is easy to reach. You've got an advantage of we 348 owners because the Mondial (T version too?) has an access hatch behind the rear seats.

Yep. The t has the access hatch. I repaired a stuck thermostat via that hatch. mind you, that's about all you can do. It is pretty small and the edges are sharp....
