    Camping season has finally wound down and now it's time for some inside fun. I started this afternoon and ended up spending most of the afternoon cleaning up before getting started. In any event here are some pics. I will post more as the story unfolds. Hard to believe that this car only 18,000 miles on the clock. Looks like the first owner banged it up a few times and had it half a**ed fixed. Oh well I got it for a song and knew that it needed work so I am where I figure I should be.

    Due to the fact that I am vertically challenged I took the trunk lid and moulding off so that I could lie on a piece of wood while I worked on the engine from up top. I have no idea why it has a Mondial 3.2 badge instead of the 't' badge, I have one on order from Daniel at Ricambi.

    The 3.2 badge is nutty... Who knows what's up with that. Maybe someone in its past wanted a "sleeper" at the stop light Grand Prix! Fool the guy in the next lane into thinking it was the 3.2... I have seen stranger things...

    Thanks for the encouragement and nice looking piece. Is that on it's way back in? Quick question if you don't mind, the 348/355 engine out guide talks about removing the heater hose that goes to the waterpump. For some reason I can't seem to spot it, is there one?

    No problem. That photo was from my last 30k serv. I have awhile till my next. As for the guide... There are the two short hoses at the top of the engine. They can be a bugger but that's it. No worries as the engine out is pretty straightforward (especially for a guy who has his own A/C recovery machine). :) I am certain the 355/348 is bound to be different anyhow because the Mondial t is... well... Special.

    Peteskie - Too funny that picture is priceless. Actually I was referring to the 'Exxon Valdez' due to the oil leaks. I used to joke that the Dodge Neon came in the , Sport, Esspresso and Valdez model due to the original head gasket failures whereby oil would literally pour out of them.

    Michael B - Thanks for the pic, I can now see where that connection is. I will hopefully have more pics this afternoon as I have been exempted from Christmas tree duty.

    Nurburgringer - I am in the automotive repair business and use it when I run training courses at my head office from time to time. At least that's what I told my business partner it was for when I bought it *smirk* Luckily he is a car guy as well.

    Ernie and everyone else - Thanks for the continued encouragement and support. It's all nuts and bolts. The one thing that I was taught as an apprentice was "If a man made it, a man can fix it" As far as customer's vehicles go I have never given up. On some of my own I should have given up sooner *lol*

    Finally on the floor

    Ready to wash and detail

    While removing the Timing belt cover 2 of the allen head bolt stripped. The where so tight I couldn't get them undone, so out came the drill and off came the heads.

    The bolts are still in the rear cover but are soaking with penetrant and if that doesn't do it a bit of gentle heat should.

    Cover off and it looks pretty good. The belt was supposedly done in 2003. Does anyone know how to read the date code on these belts?

    The only casualty of the project so far - should be salvageable

    This is what the mount is supposed to look like.

    I found the coolant leak, it is the hose the goes from the expansion tank to the centre of the engine below the upper intake manifold. Easy fix.
    I am away until the weekend but will add more pictures when I start work again next week.

    Be sure to check your alternator carefully. I can't tell from the pictures, but it may be the original Delco unit. Check the operation (output) of the unit and check the mounts for cracks.

    Yes it is the original unit and it's on the list for inspection and rebuild. I was also going to upgrade it to the 140 amp 'Iceberg' unit. I have access to lots of CS-130 castings so if the case is broken it shouldn't be an issue. Thanks as always for the heads up

    Nice, but what a difference to a 308 setup in terms of servicing. I like those little belt guide shoes on the inlet pulleys. I guess they are to make the belt behave if it gets excited.

    I have been busy with family stuff but got back at it yesterday. I forgot my camera but took these this morning.

    If you look at the last couple of pictures you will see the cause of the coolant leak. Another reason why mileage doesn't mean anything this one shows 18,000 on the odometer. A major coolant flush and neutralize is in order.

    Busy weekend, I ended up getting a fair amount done.

    Typical wiring harness mess

    Looks much better with the harness out of the way

    Wiring harness ready for cleaning

    Very ugly looking Phase Sensor (Camshaft position sensor) connector. This was the result of the coolant fitting rotting and leaking coolant onto the top of the engine. It is a wonder that I was able to get it to run at all.

    All soaked down with citrus based degreaser and waiting for the hot water, Dove dishsoap and a stiff bristle brush. For those that are concerned the drain is connected to a 2 stage interceptor that will catch the grease and oil before it gets to the storm sewer:)

    Wiring harness being detailed. All connections will be cleaned with contact cleaner, connector clearance checked before re-assembly. I will change the female connectors for the Cam Phasor as they are in really poor condition.

    Looking better, I don't intend on this car being more than a decent driver. No interest in concours and it will never be a trailer queen.

    The frame, control arms, calipers, etc will get washed after the rest of he maintenance is done.

    Next step is to pull the valve covers to start work inside. Covers to be stripped and repainted. From what I have read so far I assume that VHT wrinkle is the only choice available that is close to the correct colour?

    I am going to repack the flywheel while I am at it. The clutch discs are ok. The first plate is lower than the second plate but I am going to leave them for the moment. They are easy enough to change when the assembly is back in the car.
