Hey guys, I have a friend who is trying to self diagnose a problem on his Mondial T. Its a 89 car, its running very rich on the driver's side bank. The 5-8 slow down light is flickering. He pulled the plugs on driver's bank to find them totally black and sooty. Anyone have any advice or experience with this symptom? Thanks in advance folks!

I am new to the t as we just bought ours this year, but we had the same problem along with the check engine light. You could smell the fuel in the exhaust. Turned out to be an o2 sensor. When the computer can't get good information from the o2 sensor it goes to a default rich mixture. I gues the fuel in the cat heats up and you can get slow down light. There are of course other sensors that could be the culprit. Fernando and Richard at competizione sport in MD put it on their computer for real time diagnosis, but if you search fchat, there is a thread for the 348 explaining how to get the stored diag codes by puching a button in the trunk and watching the check engine light blink. It is easy and fun to do.
Any code refering to lamba(or something like that) has to do with the o2 sensor
You can also search all posts by me and find the thread that way also.

The 89 doesn't have that self diagnose feature, IIRC.

The 89 is Motronic 2.5 and the 90 and later are 2.7, which are capable of doing the self diagnosis.

Mine did that and I cleaned up both air mass meter connectors with Stabilant 22 and no problems since then (over a year).

It was so bad, it would turn the rear bumper cover black!
