while attempting to install belts on my mondial 4 valve I have encountered an issue.with flywheel on 14 tdc mark the cam mark visible through the fill hole is not lined up.also marks on gears from an earlier replacement are also not lined up.if I turn the engine a few degrees to line up cam mark then marks on gears are lined up as they should be.I had the flywheel off but it will only go on one way.it seems that both belts are one tooth off of the driver sprockets.this car ran but I do not know how well because when it arrived the clutch was burned out of it.is it possible to have the belts one tooth off and still run without valves hitting pistons? a compression test yeilded 100 psi + or - 5psi.I am tempted to line up cam and pulley marks, lock cams, remove belts, put flywheel at tdc and install belts.then turn over by hand.or am I plum crazy.thanks for your help

100PSI is very low - should be more like 160+ with a warm engine.....

Something's not right, at this point I would consider lifting the cam covers and seeing what's really going on.

A piece of sage advice I read a while ago was "never trust someone else's timing marks unless you've validated/verified them"! The possible consequences of this being wrong & guessing based on some marks of unknown origin are way more expensive than a pair of cam cover gaskets - and besides, if you lift the cam covers you can check the valve clearances :)

    My thoughts exactly.
It's time to take the plunge (either in your own time or your money) to figure out what's up.

Same advice from me. Remove the cam covers, check the cams and do it right!
That means degreeing the cams :)

Also agree that 100 psi is too low. Something is now right.
You are using new belts and tensioners, right?

You have to degree the cams to set it properly. They also recommend setting the valve clearances, so you have to remove the covers anyway.

locked cam banks with visual mark on cam lined up and prior marks on cam sprockets aligned.put both belts one tooth off on the driver sprocket to line up 1-4 tdc mark and rolled the dice.i may have to much hillbilly in me to own a ferrari but i can't help it.compression went from 100 to 140 on my cold engine.i can't beleive what this seller did to me.i am now convinced it was not the truckers fault for the burned up clutch.it may take years and cost thousands of dollars but I will someday do firey burn outs in this car and have fun doing so.thanks again to everyone for your help.it ain't over yet

I'm happy that you've got the problem fixed. It will perform a LOT better, too!
Just for curiosity I would do the compression test again after some driving, and with a hot engine. I would bet it's going to be a little bit better.

Personnaly, I would take the time to degree the cams now ....
