I don't know about California, but here in Texas once something falls off a vehicle and hits the road, it becomes anonymous road debris. No recourse on the vehicle or driver that lost it.

Insurance companies are pretty quick to write off a car because there is a shortage of competent repair people. Expect to have to accept it being totaled and then negotiate to buy the salvage. Then have it repaired at your leisure. Who knows, you may end up keeping your car and have less money in it once all the math settles.

Sorry for your mishap, glad all is well with your and your wife.
    This too shall pass.

You have to actively manage the Claim.
If you truly want to keep the car I would work to avoid the branding of the Title with the "Salvage" banner.

I post about this all the time, but YOU are the customer, in dealings with the settlement..they owe you "repair to existing quality".

    What an unlucky hit!
It may be a good thing you were in Cali, though. There are great shops out there, Gary Bobilieff, Patrick Ottis.

Just steer this into a Ferrari specialist, allow the repair with "period correct used parts" as most are now NLA thru Ferrari anyway, and steer the repairs thru the existing coverage of your policy.

    HTH.
A great thread, congrats on getting "Thread of the Month"!!!

Hello ... had purchased my mondial t cabriolet in 2008 .... to date it has 18000 miles .... the rear clear plastic window may come across as perfect .... but ... would appreciate any advice on achieving a factory perfect void of any imperfections ... without replacing with after market top .... ALSO if anyone can give me any insight on single lift post ...or any lift that can be recommended .... thank you ... for your time and feedback ....

A late echo here.. I'm using it from the beginning. Gives you some piece of mind driving through countries and are forced to park outside sometime during the night. Very nifty little gate lock. doesn't take more then 5 sec to put on and take off.

Great trip as well! I like trips with the Mondial.

The update is... no definitive update at the moment.

The car is at the Ferrari dealer. I spoke with three different body repair shops in town that specialize in Italian exotics, all recommended by various other Ferrari owners. The third one I called was one name that had come up a few times. As soon as I started speaking with him, he said that I absolutely had to take the car to the Ferrari dealer, due to their position of authority relative to the insurance industry. The dealer actually contracts some of their repair work out to him, and he would be working on my car for this repair. Once the dealer had it on the lift, he came out and looked at it to work up an estimate.

I am confident the car can be repaired without being subject to a salvage title, but I don't have the numbers yet. I kind of want to keep my mouth shut until I know more, and I'm trying to be patient.

I did not know that this was named thread of the month! Kind of a bittersweet honour. I hope I can finish this thread up with a happy report that everything turned out well, soon!

Good strategy.....it often involves third party appraisers, unless the insurance carrier has one nearby...keep us updated.

    I'll guess:

    $18,675.14.

I have (finally) received news today that my car will be repaired. This took some wrangling on the part of the General Manager of Ferrari Maserati of Alberta with the appraiser. Basically, the appraiser wanted to declare the car a write-off since there aren't really any replacement parts available to fix some of the damage to the undercarriage. Carlo at Ferrari Alberta had to explain to him that the correct fix for any car like this is to fabricate those parts. I had previously attempted to communicate this very same information to the appraiser, but it fell on deaf ears. Apparently, it is more authoritative coming from the dealer.

I've been kind of in limbo for the last few weeks waiting to find out whether the surgeons were going to operate, or if my HMO was going to insist we pull the plug (so to speak). I'm very glad to get word that my car will be saved. There is a lot of work to do to, but none of the damage compromised the structural integrity of the car, so I am very encouraged. I do not have a definitive timeline, but I have been told that it will be spring before I get my car back. Until then, there is a conspicuously empty bay in my garage.
