Upgrade from a 3.0 to a 3.2 : better or worse?

  1. Good move, I wouldn't go back to a 3.0

  2. Nothing new, same points of attention

  3. More problems with the 3.2 than with the 3.0

I'm the proud and happy owner of a '82 Mondial QV coupe. It's a 3.0 and is great condition. The last 3 to 4 years, much has been done on the car: engine revision, new exhaust, removal of corrosion spots, etc...

Currently, there are some great Mondial 3.2 convertibles for sale here and I wonder if they have the same points of attention than compared to the older 3.0's. That is most of the time electric circuitry problems (mass).

What are your experiences after having upgraded from a 3.0 (coupe) to a 3.2 (convertible)?

I was looking at a 3.2 on eBay and thinking about it myself if the price was right. Then I decided that I have spent a couple years making mine "right" and I would hate to start all over with another car and all its deferred maintenance. I don't think the extra 20 HP is worth the extra hassle at this point. In a perfect world though, I think the 3.2 is the best Mondial compromise between cost and speed.

I had a QV coupe first. After about 6 months with it and some issues i thought about restoring/modifying it. Realized for what i was about to take on i could simply buy a 3.2 in better condition. That said any 2 random cars that are old and used do not define that model. My 3.2 has had less issues in 7 years than my QV did in as many months.

I haven't had a 3.0 Mondial but I have a '82 308 in addition to my '88 3.2 Mondi cab. The 3.2 seems like a much more modern car with better electrics and build quality. The 3.2 is certainly no rocket ship with all the extra weight of the Mondial luxuries - I would guess the delta in performance between the 3.2 and 3.0 in practical terms is pretty small.

I've always thought the bumpers look better on the 3.2 but that's just personal preference and has nothing to do with build quality. In any case, you'll love a 3.2 just like you do your 3.0!

Do convertibles have more problems with water infiltrations ? If so, there must be more rust problems inside the car (footwells...).
