It's no big secret that I am a huge fan of the Ferrari mondial. Apparently I am not the only one. Today I took my girl to the Radnor Hunt Concours. I parked in the Ferrari area. Whenever I would go back to my car for something, I would find more than a few admirers gathered around...and she was in some serious company. So I guess I am not the only one who finds her drop dead gorgeous. But here is another side. I went to the car show with my business partner who is 6'7 and his son who is 5'8 (I am just under 6 feet). We all fit comfortably in the car. After the show, we took her for a very long drive blasting through the countryside. The engine sounded fantastic and the car handled extraordinarily well--even with a full load. You should have seen their faces as the engine ripped to 7K.

I just can't get enough of this car! and to the all the naysayers I have to admit, I just don't get it. Sure it doesn't handle as well as a 328, but it still handles exceptionally well...and like a true midengine car. It also may not be the fastest car in the world, but it will certainly hold its own against any of its contemporaries. In short, I just love this car.

    Amen.

You should try a T... It does handle better than a 328, and its faster.

Cause very few buyers could really give a damn.Forget the cheezsy this and that, forget that cabs look like a rolling Gucci and out handle 99% of everything out there and on the interstate can run down jap bikes like F14s on Cessnas, forget the bargain price and FORGET RESALE.The reason you must get just the right model is because these Cars cost too much not to consider the investment value. It must be considered an expendable asset and liquidation value is always a major concern, especially to your wife.To remain valuable the model must be of interest to owners of Cars of higher Ferrari heirarchy and stature, especially from a world market standpoint. You better love your sammie Mondial cause your gonna have it for a long, long time, its just for sure a model that NOBODY will ever write a big check for,and when its all said and done there will be very little difference between what the mondi cost and what the euro qv GTB cost.Personally I like red GTSqv euro.Fchat buyers save your coins,GREAT CARS are coming to market every other week at fair prices,be carefull and never, ever buy a mondial.GT4s are ditto. sincerely

They all look good. I wouldn't put the Mondial at the top of my Ferrari list, but when you see them mingling with "normal" cars there's no doubt the Mondial is a stylish ride.

There was a red Mondial QV used as a daily driver around where I live a few years back -- never met the guy, but compared to the fleet of BMWs and Lexi that cruise around here the Mondial was maybe the only interesting car on the road.

    Regis-
I hope your 308 can hold 4 people, because if it can't you may one day find yourself in the market for a Mondial...and NO, I won't sell you mine.

As far as investments..if you are buying a car for its investment value, I have a really nice boat to sell you.

To your quote "NOBODY will ever write a big check for"...I can recall more than few Ferrari's that people said that about before...So forgive me if I don't put all my money on that one...

oh and for the Ferrari heirarchy...I stopped worrying about what the cool kids thought when I was in 5th grade.

I'm right there with ya' Joe! Loving every minute of the Mondial. I love the 308 and 328 cars as well, but for me right now the Mondial made the most sense. (Two little kids that are about as car crazy as I am - and I can take both of them AND the wife with to go for a ride and stop for some gelato.) Now from an investment perspective, I'll agree that you're not going to buy a Mondial for that. However, I must agree that I'm surprised at how many looks mine gets in shows with Ferrari's surrounding it worth 10 times and even 50-75 times the value. (410 SuperAmerica, 250 Europa, etc.)

However, do the (production) numbers and you'll see that the limited number of exceptional condition Mondial's out there will be much harder to find than a 308 or 328 in the future. Now we'll all probably be dead before they're "investment grade" - if they ever get there - but as time marches on I believe these little guys will be collectible.

Regardless, if you can buy into your Ferrari dream for around $30-40 grand for an exceptional Mondial - whatever model you prefer - and keep livin' the dream for an average of about $2,500 a year I'd say you're not doin' too bad! Enjoy the hell out of it, that's what it was made for!!!

Regis speaks as a collector and speculator, not that there is anything wrong with that; he speaks not as a true enthusiast or pure motor kind of guy... more of a Keith Martin.
These guys always lose me once they mention the word 'investment' - they just don't get it.

It's OK to present the "investment" side of the picture. Nobody should go in with eyes wide shut. But I think the warning is overstated. My car, (1990 t cab), is gorgeous, I only paid $35k, plus about $5k in refurbishment supplies. It's easy and fun to work on, drives great, and is practical as a daily driver. I don't think it will ever be worth less than what I paid - in fact, since I am carefully refurbishing it from top to bottom, I think that if I ever went to sell it, I would be able to demand a bit more: at least get my $40K back. Well, one thing in my car's favor is that it seems to be one of the few Nero Metallizzato cars in the world. I have yet to see another example in any pre-355 model V8. Not everybody likes it, but once you decide you like it, as I have, the other cars all look plain.

You may have seen the top picture before - I bought the car from an ad here.

The bottom picture is in my garage, otherwise known as Alfetta hell. (the beige car in the background) :D This picture shows the color better though.

My first Mondial was a 3.2 QV metallic black. My next Ferrari was a Grigio Met 700 Mondial T coupe. Have had it since day one, 18.5 years ago. Rosso interior. I just love that car. :)

I can't tell if you are joking or not. If you are not, please know that I have driven a bunch of 308's, it was my second choice. Nothing against them, I just liked the Mondial more. I sincerely don't feel like I am losing anything in the Mondial. I got into Ferrari for the history, the midengine design and the glorious sound...i got it in spades.

Also, the 3.2 mondial is still quick even in today's numbers, with a zero-60 of 6.8 seconds I am not terribly afraid of getting run over by minivans, I just have no interest in racing anybody. If I wanted fast I would have gotten the Maserati coupe I was looking at.

BTW my wife has great taste ;) .. but we disagree on some things .. she thinks her Boxster's pretty cool but whenever I take her for a ride in the 308 she's . ..well like I said before . . "yeah I get it" . . . I took her for a ride in the stock 308 we have and she said "when will you put another motor in this thing so I can drive it" . .. knowing it was unsafe for Cali and the minivan/SUV contingent :).

    cheers

If it was zero to 60 you were after, why in the world did you start with a 308? Why not a lotus elise or a 355?
Also, 5.5 seconds may be impressive for a 25 year old car, but I wouldn't go bragging about it at the drag strip. There are a whole slew of rather mundane sedans that are breaking the six second barrier. Heck a BMW 1 series would eat you for breakfast and that new Hyundai sedan would give you a good run for your money...I would be careful the next time you see that H in your rear view

I don't know, it just seems really strange for someone on this board to be bragging about zero-60, minivans, etc. No offense, it just sounds really juvenile.

Maybe your next car should be a Toyota Supra. You can paint it purple, get one of those coffee can exhaust tips, run a turbo the size of a jet turbine and invite all of your friends over and watch fast and furious over and over again ;)

Okay smartass, why don't you list YOUR car on your profile, that way I won't assume (@ss out of YOU and...) ;)

BTW, unless it's a t (or your wife is an athlete or body-builder) I doubt she can drive a Mondial in traffic or town more than twice (no power steering, engaging reverse requires upper body strength, fairly heavy clutch in stop and go traffic, weak A/C, and on...) Big grin for ya :D
