Very cool - it's good to have that kind of visual feedback - helps sort out flaws - kind of like parking under gas station fluorescents at night.

Just back from Clive's place to see how my old (but immaculate) '83 Mondial QV is coming along as the Mondial Z.

When I first saw it a year or so back, I (privately) thought he was a nut, but the final shape is brilliant.

It seems that NONE of the visual renditions in this thread are even close. The car is much tighter, much more aggressive, more more integrated as a total design than any of these attempts (not a criticism of the attempts as you really need to see it to sense the complete package). WOW!

Clive is finally getting the last few days worth of sanding out of the way before it goes to the mold makers.

From the back it has clear 355 and 360 cues with some (the better part of) Nissan GTR R33 hints. From 3/4, the overwhelming presence of the rear hips, which flow into the doors, with 3-4" more width on each side than the standard Mondial is just the most natural yet imposing form of any Ferrari of recent years. More aggressive than the 430 and just as fluid.

The front is shaping up nicely, with 360 Stradale cues, that feels almost elegant until you move to include the rear arches in your view. Then you get the full power of the shape.

Overall, the car feels about a foot shorter, a foot wider and 6" lower, with the roof line finally looking integrated into the flow of the car, not sitting atop it as for the original shape.

It is still in clay so hard to get final feel without light reflections from a gloss finish, but it really does look the part.

The interior is quite a leap as well and will be really impressive in 3 seat (central driving position) form.

Whilst there is something about the standard Mondial shape (its understated elegance?) that keeps me interested (I have just bought my second QV) I think that Clive has created an interpretation that will have people understand what the Mondial could have been with 20 years of foresight at the time of its design.

Certainly worth seeing the project through and challenging perceptions of the Mondial. Makes me want to buy another so that I can have one of each - 100% original (my silver one with few miles on it and original paint/leather) and one of Clive's modern iterations.

I took some photos on my phone. Don't know how to get them to my MAC as my phone won't talk to it.

They won't show much change from the earlier shots except:
    - the engine cover is now one piece and nicely refined with great looking slats/vents
    - the rear of the front bonnet below the window is much flatter now with a new design of wiper going in. Much nicer. The rounded lip looked odd.
    - the fairing of the bonnet makes it cleaner

The car is SO diferent in real life. Much more aggressive than even the best shots Clive posted earlier in the thread.

    Will be quite a looker.

    Well,

I have been rather busy for the last couple of months with 2 ship disasters; 1 was a fire on a ship full of frozen squid (May) and the other was two nights ago when a tanker exploded in the South China Sea (1 guy died) so not much physical progress on the car.

I have, however, been thinking (not good) about switches. I have finally decided to make my own - now there's a surprise. I like the Motorola V3 razr switchpad so I will be doing something similar by laser cutting thin stainless sheet, backlighting it with flexible electroluminecent material and using microswitches mounted on individual PCBs as the actuators.

Oh yes and I will be making my own steering wheel.

The Razr switches are OK, but it would be more snazzy to go to bodyheat thermal "buttons" that can be any shape and that don't depress.

As for steering wheels, some lacquer-embossed in the style of the Enzo key would be sharp.

I tested some switches that activated on touch (no depression) but decided against them for practical reasons. My thinking was that I didn't want to activate the switch accidentally while feeling for the right switch during driving, especially at night. In other words I want positive activation feel.

I am talking to a cloisonne factory in China for details and badging but not for the steering wheel.

Positive activation feel is the way to go; backlighting the thermal switches is mandatory!

Excellent. The thing I like the absolute most about this car is the 'Coke-bottle' shape front to rear from the top. The larger rear really adds directionality and a sense of power. With this shape I am expecting the 'stance' of the car to be terrific.
    Well done, indeed.

Hi Clive, Great to see you progressing more, what will you be making the remoulded bootlids out of, also will the one piece bootlid/engine cover fit a standard Mondy as I like the raised lip at the back

They can be made of GRP, carbon fibre, kevlar, etc.
The new boot lid would fit a standard Mondial with only a small amount of adjustment but you would need to add little spoiler fairings to the end of the rear wings so that the spoiler doesn't just 'stop' in midair at the end of the boot lid. It will not fit a Cabriolet.

I like the way the door and rear quarter air inlet turned out. Too bad the factory didn't use that design instead of the egg crate. I have a 1981 Mondial. Waiting to see the finished car. It would be great if you had a video showing the process.

How much would one be in Carbon fibre, also would you ne able to make Grp spoiler fairings for the rear wings so I can bond them on and fill the edges

I am not sure what you mean by a "video showing the process"? What information would you like to know; how to design the car or the physical techniques used to create the sculpture or something else entirely?
