The vette is not the first car with carbon fiber to be painted. If you look at an F40, Enzo or F50, you can see the "weave" pattern through the paint. Thats just how carbon fiber paints, to me, its gorgious and only shows a little bit of whats really underneith
That's not entirely true. The F50 is the only car that you can see the weave through and it has to do with the last layers of gel coat being omitted in favour of paint. FWIW, if you don't think that you can paint carbon fiber without the weave showing through, take a walk down to you local bicycle shop and take a look and even the most basic and cheap carbon fiber frames. No weave.
I will agree with you that you can paint them w/o showing the weave, as my best friends Hayabusa is all C/F and you can't see the weave in most spots. However, I think the F40 shows more weave than any of the others and I have persoanlly seen the weave on the enzo and f40 as well as the f50
I have never seen an F40 where you can see the weave through the paint - and I've seen very many and driven several (and cleaned one that I drove in the rain). I have only seen 3 Enzo's and none had the weave through the paint. But is Ferrari. Consistency across the line is not a guarantee.
For those of you who have not seen this, this is the 1987 PPG Pace car based on a Mondial 3.2. It sold recently at Auction. I REALLY like the way they slimmed down the flying buttress at the rear with more glass, although the rear is a bit heavy. I've been kicking around some ideas for the interior: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The sloped line will be an armrest and will come out of the door a fair way and blend into the dash. The door pocket will reflect the shape of the exterior scoops. The mirror is about right (only small changes needed). And before some smart comments come back about the interior colour...
The PPG Pace car is a great looking Mondial...blending in the grates like that is cool, as is the Formula 1 nose.
Clive: Any update on the interior? We've gotten to the stage were I am getting prices for re-trimming mine. Thanks, Erik
Questions: 1) Exactly what parts do you need 2) Do you need just the leather or the parts as well 3) Where on the planet are you now (other than between a rock and a hard place) Note: My car is right hand drive but I also have the interior of a LHD cabriolet.
1. Seat covers for the front. Door panels. 2. The leather by itself is all I need. It may be easier to send the whole seats and panels though. 3. I'm in Shanghai right now, but the car and the work will stay in the USA. I don't think RHD changes the seats or the doors.
Seats should be OK. Driver's door has the mirror switch hole. I'll take some pics. I will also try to find a Pantone colour match for the leather so you can check the colour match.
Sorry I have been travelling for the last 5 weeks. Clive, does those vents on the bonnet work? As in aiding more downforce kind-of-like-F50? Are you going to mold new light clusters into the bottom side or fit 355 lamps. I noticed the shaped foam over the dash/instruments panel, are you doing CFibre or wrapped over G.fibre? BTW, do you have a spare 355 challenge grille? Jon
Jon, The vents exhaust hot air from the front mounted radiator. The headlights will be self-levelling Hella bi-xenon with CNC machined aluminium housings. The LED indicator/front position lamps will be made from scratch (see below) again with aluminium housings. The whole lot will be housed under vacuum formed poly-carbonate covers mounted in the clamshell bonnet. The foam that you see is not "over" the dash, it is the start of a complete new fabrication. The production dash can be either cf or grp and trimmed in any material. Sorry I don't have a 355 challenge grill. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey Clive, I see you have tech drawings for the lamps. Are they ready for production? Hook me up on them. I'm thinking of doing a similar job on my 911 but I think I'll most likely give up halfway through. Perserverance man!
I have decided to go for a one piece rear deck lid to replace the "stepped" engine & bootlids. Here is the start - a flat sheet of aluminium: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Okay Clive, it's official, I want the seats and door panels. Can you give me a price (in private) with shipping to the USA?
