Well, in the end it looks like on this 456 the Brunei Sultan dude just had the car repainted and the transmission swapped. While I can't vouch for the Sultan's brains, that's hardly unheard of in the automotive world.

I read elsewhere he had far more radical additions and modifications made to a few more of his 456s: on one in particular he had a night-vision, radar-controlled system installed (with a roof-mounted turret) so that he could drive at night with his lights off and command a complete view of the surrounding areas. We are talking maaaany years ago, when this technology was still science fiction.

The man probably has 6 other 550s lying around and wanted one with a slush box, I don't see why that's an issue.

All the work was done by Ferrari and Pininfarina. It's a one-off factory car with an interesting history. I don't see the problem. Bet it ends up a valuable car in future years.

I would like to have one of those 456 wagons he commissioned. Those are sweet.

I'm thinking that article is a bit wrong...
I've heard previously there are 6 wagons, of which the Sultan received 5 - the other went to a guy in Belgium.
and I thought all the Sultans cars were RHD, including some Ferrari's which were only available in LHD ?

    Anyone know more ?
