I just happened to watch last week's and this week's episodes of Monster Garage on Discovery and was totally turned off by what I saw:

    - First they turned a perfectly fine Miata into a "jetski". The thing doesn't work properly and instead of fixing it, they just burn the car.

    - This week they use a Rolls Royce, take out the rear seats and put in waste collection tanks, repaint the car and start collecting sewage in Beverly Hills.

I couldn't believe what I saw. I was so ticked off for two reasons:

    - They destroy perfectly fine cars
    - They waste all these man hours of talented car builders by doing such an utterly idiotic project.

Imagine if these guys would put their talent and hours towards rebuilding a worn down racecar or even build something crazy, but fun like a hot rod?

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I didn't understand the waste of resources of this show. Obviously younger folks like it.

I agree, but you got to remember it's about ratings and more important money. Discovery channel is making a killing on Monster Garage merchandise.

Same here.....the show just became nonsense.

I do enjoy watching Overhaulin', where they take a beater and make it into something hot.

I saw the episode with the Rolls also.
I did not see where there was any real tough engineering.
Anyone with a welder and a torch could do that.
I hate to admit it but I have watched "Pimp my ride" (with my son).
Its on MTV I believe. They come up with some very outlandish "restorations",
    but they are very creative.

The only program that I can see in Belgium from the two mentioned above is Pimp my ride and I like it. They do some cool things to those old wrecks...But ruining a perfectly fine Rolls is stupid.

It was painful to watch and they even had a Rolls specialist on the show. I wonder what he was thinking when he saw their plan.

Don't forget Andreas, its TV, and I wouldnt not think that this "specialist," had too much real credit. Shows like MTV's Cribs talk about how certain celebrities' cars can cost upwards of $200,000 and can reach 0-60 times in 5 seconds. I've seen them relate these numbers to 355s!

I simply hate Monster Garage. I give much respect to Jessie and his motorcycle efforts, but the Discovery ride it till it dies spin on things is simply awful. Got to love their fun attitudes and characters but the whole flow of the show and over-hype on time limits and the wild cookiness of their design grows old fast. I can just hear the announcer's voice, " If the boys don't get there act together in the next two days they will fail to build their flame throwing Pinto and lose out on their brand new set of Craftsman tools. Stay tuned to see what Jessie and the boys will do next! " Same as last week, same as before, same, same, same... I think I need a bucket to puke in... maybe they can hotrod that.

I missed the Rolls episode, but I'm not shocked. It's somehwat stupid, but certainly not as much as taking a POS and stuffing TV monitors and blinghetty wheels all over. Give the kid 20 grand so he can get a decent ride that will run more than a block!

"they ruined a Miata, and burned it". Big fokkin deal. They ruin the cars. Yeah. So what? Ok, the Rolls and DeLorean make me skip a beat, but most of the time, the cars are worthless junks they pulled out of the scrapyard anyways.
I'm more annoyed by the global lack of talent involved. They just weld crap here and there, call it a day, and the damn thing kinda works long enough for the shoot. Was funny at first, but it's gotten pretty lame.

Overhaulin', on the other hand, is rather nice. They do a bunch of nice bodywork. I prefer the biker build-off thingies. Love to see them build the tanks out of a flat sheet!!!

edit - oh yeah, and why is that the producers have to say "Will they meet the deadline?" every half second? Who cares about deadline when the dude is pulling off a ridiculous paintjob!!!

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned how Jesse took the Bentley guy's Arnage without asking and started doing killer donuts. Too bad he blew a hose and smoked the whole engine(!) Did make for some rather entertaining TV though.
Pimp my ride is ok sometimes but most of their 'upgrades' are distasteful and stupid.

True, the Bentley thing was in there too, but that didn't really bother me as much. I mean he was driving the car and took it to its limits and it blew. I have seen that with the 456 in that Fiorano (?) test drive video. To some degree I call that a natural death (not really, but at least driving related).

But turning a Rolls into a sewage collection vehicle is just beyond me. I just don't get it and I'm glad you guys are disappointed with this show too. So it's not just me.

Well at the end of the show they tell how much the car cost them originally. The Roller was only $6700 so it is evident that it was in quite crappy condition. Better to make a bucket into a pooper scooper than a mint into a crap sucker.

And,when they finished the Rolls. Did they ask,"Pardon Me. Do you have any Grey Poop-On?"....:)

I don't know...I still get sick to my stomach seeing that California Spyder-"Re-Creation" or not- speeding backwards and out the Window on "Ferris Beullers Day Off"....:(

Or,all of the '69 Chargers flinging through the Hills of Hazzard County....again....:(

Thankfully, when they Blew Up the 308 on the Magnum P.I. episode where his buddy,Mack started it up and it blew. It was a Fiat X-1/9. (or whatever that number configuration is....) And not a real 308. It was easy to spot that as it was burning by the shape of the body, and the lack of the dash Pod. Besides, enough of them have gotten totalled over the years by Doped up rich kids, and Rock Stars, like Bret Michaels....:)

Actually Darolls should comment on this, but I think Rollers depreciate quite heavily, so if it was at $ 6,700, that doesn't necessarily mean it was a wreck.

The expert looked at it and I think he didn't have much issues with it. It is true though that the interior looked a bit rotten. But that's kinda my point: Use these guys to fix the car up, not to turn it into something nobody needs or wants anyway.

At least they gave it a new paint job. Pimplook yes,but at least here they created something instead of destroying it.

Frank, I agree that Ferris Buehler scene is painful to watch, but I'm not sure that was really the replica that drove out the window. That might have been a cheap stunt car. I believe - not sure though - that the replica from that movie is still around.

Oh yeah,I'm sure that the "Car" laying at the bottom of the Ravine is just a bunch of parts that they threw together for the scene/shot. But,it's just watching that, which bugs me....:( Yikes!!!!

Yes,I get Hemmings Motor News every month, and you can regularly pick up older Rolls Royces for Hyundai money...All day long. But,ofcourse,it depends on it's Condition. Mostly, they are decent "Looking" Cars but with Higher Mileage...Then,by about that time, the owner starts getting scared, and wants to get rid of it before they start sinking Tens of Thousands into it. Like any car,I suppose. But,I think that you'd really be surprised at how little money can get you a 'decent' Rolls, these days. How much you end up putting into it to make it a really nice one, (Like Skip's...) well, thats a different story. But,I'm not,by any means an expert...Ask Skip...:) I'm just going by what I see in Hemmings and DuPont registry.

I'm tired of all these shows. In true TV fashion, they've taken something that is marginally interesting in a very small amount and completely bludgeoned us with numerous "tuner" shows. Have you noticed how many plastic surgery shows are on cable these days? And, hey, when does season 2 of "I want to date a race car driver" kick off?

You are correct, depreciation on new Rollers in the first few years is sizeable but, after a period of time, the depreciation levels out.

I'd say a Rolls for $6700 had to be in pretty sorry shape though.

Yup, I've known a number of people that bought them (shabby ones), at cheap prices. But then put them up for sale because they couldn't afford to repair them.

Same goes for some Ferrari buyers!

A number of years ago, I went to look at a Roller that was for sale by a private party. The car was almost as big as their house.

I asked the person why they were selling the car, and was told "It need's brakes."

I said "Ok, but why are you selling the car?"

The reply was the same; I realized then that they couldn't afford to put new brakes on it, and had to sell it.

It was in pretty sorry shape, and they probably paid next to nothing for it.

To maintain a Rolls properly is very expensive.

Ditto........find something that sells, jump on the bandwagon with variations of the concept, and pummel it to death until the original concept becomes an innocuous half-breed of its original self. A total bore.

It's the whole concept of quick money. When this fad dies off (which it will), and is, producers will be looking for the next new hype and beat it to death.

Sheesh, I wish "The Honeymooners" was still on. That was TV that never became boring no matter how many times you saw the reruns!

It would be nice to see some to the time, effort, and money from monster garage go to something worthwhile, like helping those in need... not just a celebration of excess (I'm really not a bleeding heart liberal....)

BTW, one of my friends in LA knows a guy who works for a company that rents exotics. Turns out A LOT of their business includes dropping off cars the day before "cribs" shows up! Think Fat Joe really owns a 360 spyder????

Well it has been discussed in other threads on FChat so the cat is out of the bag: Chicago's very own Giovani turned a 308 into a pasta maker.

At least that's a tad more tasteful than turning a RR into a feces collector.

I'm keeping an open mind. It'll be interesting to see the show, maybe I'll like it, maybe not. We'll see.

The "waste" of a 308 doesn't really bother me. Nuff of them made. Just like in the Miata's case, what really might bother me is the waste of resources: Having all these great mechanics together for a week and all they come up with is <insert stupid project here>. Anxious to see the pasta maker.

I stopped watching Monster Garage awhile ago. Seemed a little ridiculous to me.

The other one I blew off was Monster House: "Let disgruntled people come in and screw up your house".
