Model year begins on 1st of July and ends on 30th of June as globally agreed since several decades, but the consensus seems to be Ferrari never really assigned a model year until US VINs forced them to do so starting in 1980 or so. And when they finally did, it too changed in July, not in January. Very easy to check on US-cars that carry both model year and manufacturing date clearly stamped on them.

Calling a car completed in December 1953 a 1953 is clearly a mistake.

    Best wishes, Kare

For the record, all of the above cars should have a '0' before their respective chassis numbers.

Yes, door plate with manufacturing date appeared in 1968, but model year appeared much later (encoded into VIN code starting from 1980).

What is the estimate for the F40 at the Mecum auction? This is the car with approx. 400miles if I am correct and has not been driven for approx. 20 years. What is the mileage of the F40 at the RM auction (estimate going for $2M)?

If you go to Mecum's website they list some estimates, they also have copies of the "star" cars which are in daily catalogs that you get when you are at the auction. I think I recall a million if not close to that for the F40.

Never thought I would see late 80's prices for the F40 again but here we are now. With the difference that every model has seen some drastic rises in value. Kudos to those who went shopping in the early 90's and hung on to their rides.

Weiss's daughter says that her father found and installed Kimberly's spare engine. Barchetta says that it came out of 0380 AM. Can anyone clarify and is it known what happened to the original engine? Would the original tipo 102 engine in 0364 AM be identical to motor 0380 AM?

The original engine #0364 AM was mounted in a three point hydroplane for racing but the boat hit a log on its first run in the ship channel and sunk to the bottom of Galveston Bay.
