Just got word that I am free to go. Previous job assignment cancelled. Big question is where to stay. Most hotels along Freemont St and Munras Ave, where I like to stay are sold out. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm currently in Carmel staying at the vagabonds house. Small but a great place. Close enough to Monterey.

Some of those hotels have a "Hard date" cancellation policy in June or July. Perhaps it's worth calling the day after.

Contact a few hotels/motels in the area and asked to be placed on the list for cancellations. This group manages several places in Carmel(no commercial affiliation):

    Good luck.

Those are all big-bucks places for just a place to rest your car week marathon weary head and mind. Before I moved to the immediate area, I used to bounce between the Choice Hotels (Clarion, Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, EconoLodge...in that order) and Best Western chains. There's plenty around (Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove) and in my numerous years of experience have found them to be mostly reliable with regards to cleanliness with decent locations. Although Munras Ave has plentiful selections, Fremont St has several as well.

And just to make you wince, some of these can be had for a night right now for as little as $49...a far cry from the same room(s) during car week!

I agree with HMB-Dino, but the particular lodge does matter if you are bringing your Ferrari or other exotic, in which case you will want to know the lodge's parking situation. That said, one year we stayed at a motel in Seaside, with outdoor side-by-side parking, and the car survived OK. While normally you'd worry about a pickup or big SUV parking next to you and putting a ding in your door or worse, pretty much everyone in town that week is a car enthusiast and respectful/careful.

Didn't think $49 was possible in this area. That's a steal.

Use the HomeAway app to search for a place. Pacific Grove is a great location.
