JP has been quoted as saying that he is just as fast as Kimi. I assume he meant driving an F1 car. Anyone agree/disagree?
I assume he didn't comment on how reliable he is compared to Kimi. On a very good day JPM might be as fast, but Kimi is that fast every day of the week.
It will be shown this year. It's hard to tell after one year. Kimi has been with the team longer, JPM was adjusting, which took him way too long. JPM was, toward the end of the year, about as fast but Kimi was still more consistent. We shall see.
He must have been talking about the 40 yard dash becuase I think he's confused if he's talking about in an F1 car. Mark
Personally, I think the real speed difference between them is not that much. I think Kimi is mentally better at coping with pressure and delivering when it is needed. Next year, I predict the two will be close to each other in the points standing.
Actually I think he is faster than Kimi. But only once in a blue moon. He was utterly amazing in Monza and a complete idiot in Turkey. Kimi is consistently fast (but can make mistakes, see Nuerburgring).
I think Kimi has put up faster times because he seems to be more of a risk taker and isn't conservative in wear/tear. JPM doesn't seem to be going all out pushing the car to its limit, which results in slower lap times, but less mechanical and driver error. If both were given the same car and said to put their best one lap in it, it'd be a coin flip imo.
i agree ... the car was designed with Kimi's input and not much of JPM's input. this year will answer this question better. similar situation with alonso/fisico (not saying that fisico is faster than alonso)
Montoya is not as fast as Kimi (probably the fastest driver out there just now), but where do you guys get Kimi is reliable, the reason he lost the title was because he cannot bring the car home all the time. He races absoulutly flat out without a care to the cars condition, not his points position (lacks the racing brain to get enough points). Other drivers who win titles almost always get the car home and collect the points you need to win the championship. As for this year Kimi and Montoya should be exciting to watch as the V8 cars seem to be more forgiving in the corners, so maybe we will have some of the old racing side by side through the corners, it has been missing for a long time now, the last great races were Senna and Mansel often wheel to wheel all the way around the corners unlike Montoya.
I can be as fast as Kimi - at least until the first turn. Montoya can keep up with Kimi through quite a few turns, but can not link them together as consistently. Especially if any thinking is involved.
As someone who used to be very high on JPM, I think he is becoming a Rubens-esque driver, meaning he's a very good driver capable of having moments of brilliance. But he's also susceptible to outside forces, including his emotions. He's the type of driver who would have been a more likely champion in previous eras. Kimi is much more solid and consistent. The modern type of champion. Assuming he wins one.
i agree. JPM CAN be fast or even faster than kimi on certain times. yea, like once in a blue moon. take monza, silverstone or even brazil '04. when he's at his best, he drives like a champion. even tho i hate JPM for his so call 'cool arrogant' attitude, i must admit if he's fast, he's diff to catch.
We will have a better idea this year. I think he has flashes of brilliance but the problem is his consistency.
Yes but while Rubens could be fast on occasion he never really looked to be able to keep it up for more than a race or even two. JPM and Kimi looked pretty evenly matched in those last few races with bad luck and a questionalbe move by JV taking JPM of the last two events. This year will be a better barometer
Yes comparing JPM to Rubens was a bit harsh ... JPM is, as you say, faster more often. I was impressed with JPM last year ... mostly. Pete
