I saw an article about the new Italian Auto Club leader wanting money from the Italian govt, to restore the Monza banking... so they can race on it again!

    https://www.grandprix.com/news/monza-wants-funds-to-restore-banking-for-racing.html

While I love the idea, I think this would never happen, with govt funds. Italy is so bankrupt now and overburdened financially cant see that happening. But if F-1 goes to the Saudi's - it would be great to see that money come in and restore Monza for the high speed track it was...

now for the actual use of it? Assuming that it could be made billiard table smooth, and that some form of safety was possible ( highly doubt any of that can be done ) ... who would be crazy enough to race on it at speed?

In my minds eye I could see NASCAR or DTM maybe on the banking/ combined circuit... maybe Indy cars? surely never F-1 .... On Assetto Corsa racing simulation I have driven the banking 100's of times, and its pretty fast - slightly boring, but bumpy ... your hands are sore after 10 laps, I cant imagine a modern car on the banking. I drove a Ferrari FXXK on there and entered south banking at 213MPH... mid banking at 197, exits at 220.... that wodul be death to anyone with the slightest issue.

all that being said - this is what I want for Christmas... racing back on the banking!

No, I can't see this happening at all. It's nice that it's there as a sort of museum like history display. I think they leave it like it is and just say that was then and this is now.

They did Corsa Clienti cars at Daytona. I wonder what Pirelli found with the used tires?
But they could run sports cars and prototypes on banking.

If F1 cars bottomed out then when it was open, current F1 cars would most certainly bottom out now due to the speed and extreme centrifugal forces pushing against the car.....let alone the driver as well.

And then IF the FIA makes it a DRS zone(provided DRS is available).....ummmm no.

Just leave it as is.....a historical F1 monument that once was.

Heck, the FIA with WEC won't open the Mulsanne Straight at Circuit de la Sarthe even though the LMP1 cars are safer. It's for safety reasons.

Maybe if they changed the angle of banking to a lower angle than what the angle currently is. Maybe 19 degrees like Turn3 at Zandvoort.

I used to live close to Monza and still go there once and while when I'm visiting cousins. I know the bankings very well because I used to bike there.

Sincerely, it's a pipe dream. First, let's not forget that these sections and the straights between them are super long, which would require "outstanding" investments to restore it. Second, with current racing tires cornering speeds are so high, that in case of an accident the car would launch itself out of the track.

It's an old structure that made sense 70 years ago but today it's just history.

By the way, nowadays the surface is very strange because they applied some sort of slippery white cement on top of it, perhaps to try to lower the degradation of the structure or something.

Current F1 cars bottom out over small ripples on the road surface without having banking add 2-3 Gs of downward forces.

Yes the coating was added to preserve the crumbling concrete. I think the limestone substrate was turning to powder and allowing water to rust out the metal rebar. ... I know its a total fantasy, but its nice to dream. As for Modern F-1 if the will was there it could be made to work. the straights between the banking would have to have some chicanes added or even mid banking... the Monza Rally show uses the lower part of the banking... while its historical i hate that its not being used.
