Lemans Series race was this past weekend at Monza. We spend part of Saturday morning wandering . . . wanted to share some of our findings . . .

Walkway thru tunnel, can see guard rail where car went over for movie.
    Back of banking by tunnel.
    Banking construction.
Old structure on walk to Lesmo.
    Lost?
    Walking thru park, banking visible.
    A Montoya fan was here.
Various, flag stand, turns, looking back at flag stand, just walking.
Set camera on yellow line on track for view.
Where car went over in movie, exit from tunnel, banking where Sarte's car went over onto track in Grand Prix.

(photos not necessarily in above order!)

I was there last year for the GP. I have to say that seeing the banking was amazing, it almost made me want to kiss the track!

Absolutely wonderful, spendid and amazing pics. Thanks for sharing. Terrific. But what the heck is that giant concrete chair? Was it a scoring board? A stewards or starters platform? And what was the building with all of the doors, the garages?

I can hear the howling F1 cars from the movie Grand Prix.

    Thanks for the photos!

Did you notice that the banking has sunk just where it rejpoins the front straight outside of Parabolica? It has literally sunk into the ground several feet.
In the 70's or 8's someone had the bright idea to do a slow parade with several hundred cars around Monthlery and the poor banking did not take it very well: it was supposed to have sunk a bit too.
They put chicanes in the last years of racing there to alleviate load on the banking.

Back to Monza: yes, I have been fortunate to visit all the great circuits of Europe and the US and there is no other place that gives you that feeling of history, none whatsoever: the ultimate temple of speed.

I love Monza. Looks very nice in the spring. I have only ever been in September for the Grand Prix, although I have spent a few days there before or after the Grand Prix so I've had the opportunity to wander around without the crowds. I went for 6 years straight from 1998 to 2003. Each year you felt that a bit more of the history had gone. They changed the pit and paddock area and had to demolish some old buildings to do it. It would still be my choice if I could only go to one European F1 race.

Terrific photos! Especially all the unique angles, since we tend to see the same shots every time. So, if anyone asks why they don't use the banking anymore...

Wonderful pictures, thanks for sharing! The one thing about the track that will always stand out in my mind when I was at Monza in '01 was sitting in the stands by the chicane and you could just stare down at the old banking, I was mezmerized at how steep it was.

    I was at Monza in 89 - 90 - 91 - 93... greatest place for racing in the world...in my opinion...

I walked the banking on the south side during the morning of the 90 GP... hopped the fence and walked all around.. its just the greatest place...

I really wish they would restore the banking, so its not lost...would be a great place for NASCAR... in europe!

Restoring the banking...yes that would be incredible and wonderful but the chances of that happening are nil times a trillion.

Yes. There are two ovals in Europe where Nascar could do its thing: Rockingham in the UK and Lausitzring in Germany, the problem is the weather has to cooperate and doing it in summer would be logistically difficult for the good old boys with that incredible 28 race calendar they have...
