I would recommend the grandstand at the first turn, on the same side of the track as the pits. You can see the start finish line, you can see the first chicane, you can see most of the action, and there is no fence in the way and seats aren't too expensive.

I'd buy right from the track if you can, everything else is marked up.

Methinks Monza will be overflowing with tifosi wanting to see the Great One return to his rightful place. Better buy early!

    Mike,

First turn as in the chicane at the end of the start finish straight?
If so, I'm still not sure which side the pits are on, I think they are on the inside, but would the section you are referring to be GS 6 or 8?

we've sat in almost every grandstand and our preference for most action at one time with a big screen tv is Ascari - buy your tickets from the track - this site has good visuals of the various locations - http://www.monzanet.it/eng/f1_gp_09.aspx

    hi tom
I was in monza 3/4 times and the best stand for viewing is on the start/finish line
great place to see drivers up close, also your clear view of the cars coming out of the pits.
also easy access to the track after the race, also you get to the old banking section
that comes onto the new track.

GS 12,13,15,16, or 19 (or other)?

Also Carol, what do you think about start/finish or the first chicane after the start/finish?

I HAVE BEEN IN MONZA TWICE AND I THINK THAT THE BEST GRANDSTAN IS 6A. AFTER THE
RACE YOU CAN EASILY RUN TO THE PODIUM AND SEE MS SCORING HIS FIRST WIN AFTER THE COMBACK!

Just bought ticket to 6A. I would agree it's the best. Just been there once before, but it's the best all things considered.

14 is best but sold out - 12, 13, 15 are good - first chicane is okay but would not be my choice - guess you need to look at the track map and see what appeals to you most - I'd rather be where I can see action and that's why we like Ascari. Pit out is okay if you want to be right by the cars but they aren't showing those seats being available. We saw some great passing at the LMS races from Ascari - what's really neat in 12 or 13 is that you can see them come out under the banking - makes for some great photos, especially with the banking in the background. There's lots of paths around the circuit in the park. I'd go Friday and walk the track (assuming the F1 folks will let you do that). I'm sure as you've already discovered, every response on here for the best stand will be different!

Here's a link to some of the closest hotels - we've stayed in Cinisello Balsamo - maybe 10 minutes from park where circuit is located http://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?city=-121726&ssne=Milan&error_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fsearchresults.html%3Fsid%3Dcb5e6b28fc1d2df86bef774e532023ad%3Bcheckin_monthday%3D11%3Bcheckin_year_month%3D2009-9%3Bcheckout_monthday%3D13%3Bcheckout_year_month%3D2009-9%3Bcity%3D-121726%3Bclass_interval%3D1%3Boffset%3D0%3Bsi%3Dai%252Cco%252Cci%252Cre%3Bradius%3D8%3B&sid=cb5e6b28fc1d2df86bef774e532023ad&si=ai%2Cco%2Cci%2Cre&ss=monza&radius=25&checkin_monthday=11&checkin_year_month=2009-9&checkout_monthday=13&checkout_year_month=2009-9

Suggestion for Sunday night is to turn the rental car in and stay at the Crowne Plaza at Malpensa airport - very convenient.

    Good luck.

I'm contemplating on going as well. Which is the closest airport to the track? Also, are the general admission tix worth it at all?

Milan. And I don't know myself about general admission, but usually it's worth it to pay for good seats, especially if you're going to all the effort of getting to the race.

    Found another ticket site: http://www.gp-tours.com/gp/italy/2009/tickets

6A is the stand I was talking about, right at the first chicane.

FWIW, we saw a lot of passes happen on braking into that turn.

If you are going for the 3-days, you can sit anywhere you like on the test days (great if you want to get some pics). On quali and raceday, you sit in the assigned seats.

We really enjoyed Ascari as well. Poke around and you should find some decent seats. Enjoy!

    A *note about Monza...

As you may know from watching past broadcasts, it is usually VERY hot. Humidity was very high when I was there and there was no breeze as well (prolly 95 degrees w/ 90%). You will have to walk a long ways through the park to get there unless youhave some special access. Add to this that you can't find drinking fountains (there aren't any), and it really kind of sucks. Take lots of water and be prepared to be pretty uncomfortable. Take lots of water and save your bottle(s). You can find a tap or two in the bathrooms by the restaurant/cafe. Also, I think there was a fountain (not drinking fountain, more like a statue that has spigots) which produces water behind the main grandstand area.

**This coming from a So. Californian who is pretty young, fit, and heat tolerant. FWIW.

Ooh...thanks for the heads up. Sounds pretty miserable. I was at the last Montreal GP and it was pretty hot then too, but probably no way as hot as Monza.

It rained while I was there last year, but there were cute girls giving away some kind of energy drink all over the place. Plus there are *tons* of vendors all over the place selling soda, water and beer. It's not cheap, but it's available. It is a looooong walk from your seats to the bus stop, and an even longer walk to the parking lots if you drove in. It was probably 30-40 minutes walking from our seats to the bus stop, so I wouldn'd get too crazy bringing drinks. Definitely want to have a bag with a shoulder strap. My dSLR camera, lenses, 4 cans of beer (the big size Fosters), the Kangaroo receiver, and headphones was really digging into my neck by the time we got to our seats on the way in.

Seeing that you are from NY, you could fly from JKF, EWR into MXP (Malpensa) - closest to Monza is actually Linate - LIN, but most US flights are into MXP. Here's a link to flights from JFK-LIN-JFK http://www.sidestep.com/r/Eg0zIr - go to the left hand side of the page under airports -> Milan -> uncheck everything except LIN and it will bring up those flights for you.
