Ferrari "screwed up" at Italian GP, says Marchionne https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ferrari-screwed-up-monza-marchionne-949051/ Ferrari was just out of sync at Monza, says Mercedes https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ferrari-was-out-of-sync-at-monza-says-mercedes-949232/
"Those who ignore the past, are condemned to live it again" The only way to go forward is to acknowledge the mistakes of yesterday.
It seems that Vettel and Raikkonen were the victims of wrong set up for the cars. Fearing Mercedes power would give them an advantage, Ferrari gambled in reducing the rear wing angle to increase top speed. Qualifications in the rain didn't allow them to verify the validity of that solution. On Sunday though, the cars proved to be unstable under breaking with less downforce, preventing the drivers to attack. As the fuel tank became lighter towards the end of the race, the situation became worse. Vettel could just maintain station far behind the leaders, and Raikkonen was unable to resist Ricciardo's move. I hope a lesson has been learnt.
Monza 2017 was to Ferrari what Singapore 2016 was to Merc. A set up disaster. Nothing more. Ferrari will obviously learn the lessons and we will move on. Fact is everyone expected Ferrari to finish no higher than 3rd and that is exactly what was achieved. That's a good outcome at our poorest track. Singapore will be a completely different situation.
Monza was never going our way unless there where 2 merc engine failures. We knew this from the beginning. Mercedes turned their engine down, but whose to say that Ferrari didn't? Vettel wasn't born yesterday...Singapore and Malaysia will be far more telling. If we lose those races to Mercedes then it's game over.
Not a good race, but that´s racing: better than expected at Spa, worse at Monza. Learn and move on. The good news is that the only race similar to Monza is next year again at Monza, so no need to worry about it for a while.
How about engines? Do we have any new engine coming this fall? Anyone have any word on if it will have more power and how much? Stefano
Had the weather been dry on qually they could have remade adjustments. Testing restrictions I guess. Also restrictions to simulation testing I think. They simply did not know how different the car would be with the wing change.
The wings are so sensitive that simulators are still able to only do the basic job, the practice time is then used to fine tune and make the difference, hence the lap time reductions session by session under normal circumstances. Hence, the ferraris were still quick enough for the third/fourth row, but not where they expected to be capable of, the first or at worst second, that's the fine tuning part. I'm assuming that's what went wrong
I think a lot of things went wrong in Monza. The set up, the tire strategy... I just hope this is not a downfall for the races to come.
Well... I think if they do not win decisively in Singapore, we can put all the wishful thinking, the excuses, the hopes and dreams...behind us and just watch another Mercedes season takeover.
the big "mistake" is that the Merc has the best engine and the track suited their car 100%. We were never going to win this race. 3rd was the absolute maximum. Looking back and dwelling on monza doesn't do much for Ferrari. They know why they lost Agreed on if we lose Singapore and Malaysia it's wrapped up for Merc. They have the best car and easily the best car in qualifying. With these new, wide aero heavy cars track position is everything and Merc get it every race by starting on pole. Have to take pole in Singapore.
