Whenever I come back from a run in my 348TS. I get a mooing cow/bahhing sheep noise from the left rear of the engine bay. I thought it may have been the expansion bottle but all fluids are ok and its just been serviced (was happening before the service as well). My local dealer is absolutely clueless and I prefer not to take it to them if I can help it. The specialist I do trust is quite a way away and its a long trek juts for a noise. Has anyone come across this noise and know what might be casuing it/how I could remedy it. Doesn't have any effect on the drive is just annoying and embarressing!
    Thanks

Jaime -- I know this sounds a little odd, but try opening the petrol cap and releasing the fuel tank pressure to see if it affects the noise (IME sometimes the fuel evaporation control stuff can make some whines/groans)

Thanks all, ha ha if nothing else it did give me a laugh, but seriously it is a very funny sound and is embaressing. Its hard trying to look cool when it does sound like I have a sheep trapped in the engine compartment. I'll have to record it and post it just so you don't all think I'm crazy !

Thanks 91tr, that's not a bad idea I hadn't thought of the fuel filler could be a blocked breather pipe I will try it.

This is just a guess, but have a look at the exhaust. Look to see that everything is hooked up properly. It could be that the exhaust has come loose were it connects to the muffler, or to the catalytic converter. Also have a look at the mounting brackets for the muffler. Make sure that those are tightend down properly. I'm guessing it is something that is loose. If that doesn't work, look to see if it is dripping milk. Hahahaaa, just messing with you.

This almost sounds like air trapped in the cooling system. When the system is under pressure and the car is shut off, pressure in the system goes up. You may be hearing air being let out of the expansion tank, or the coolant is bubbling in the tank.

You could also check to make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks in the induction system aswell.

The gas cap/tank venting is another possiability as already stated.

When I shut down my '77 308, right after the engine stops, there is a 'Glug-Glug', like two gulps. I do not know if this sound is in the exhaust or the cooling system, but it sounds kinda cool!

    Tom B is on it.
I have heard the MOOO/BAAAA(buzzing noise) on other cars. It is usually right after they stop and there is no more circulation of water in the system. The water temp goes up and the radiator cap sometimes 'fluttters' when venting causing the noise.

Well then if that is the case then a cooling system bleeding should take care of the unwanted air. Either that or he needs a new radiator cap.

I've heard the buzz just from the water flushing through. A new cap would be a good idea. I went with an AC Delco that was rated 1 lb higher than stock. Works great.

    Okay,

From one 3.4 liter owner to another... I know the sound.

My 1989 Mondial t has the 3.4 ( as you may know) and it makes that sound you mention after shut down.

I find that it is fuel system related. Perhaps fuel pressure regulator, or evaporation control. No matter what it is - it does not seem like it is a fault, it seems more like the "nature of the beast" to me.

I am tracking it down though. I will try to post some findings if I pin-point the culprit.

I'm with 91TR, it's the fuel tank pressure relief valve.

They all do it, and same thing on TR family, even 360.

It's not a problem or a blocked vent or anything, the tank is designed to hold a bit of pressure (generated by engine heat) to help fuel pick up and anti evaporation within the lines on hot start.

It often gets set off when you slam the door as you get out after a hot drive. the shock of the door jars the valve off it's seat.

If thats not it...it must be "an udder" problem that I can't think of......

Thanks everyone and yes FerrariFixer spot on it does often happen after I slam the door, so sounds likely. Ah well now I know its a feature not a fault :) still they could have tuned it to make it sound more like a growl than a Baaaah :)
