    Gentlemen:

I just have one simple question (which I'm sure someone will complicate)
is morality in general going up or going down?

Up. Hookers say "please" and "thank you" and have the decency to hide Gideon Bible.

Same -- it's just that depraved acts get publicized more quickly and over a wider area (or do you really think the 1950s was like "Ozzie & Harriet" ;)).

    Kinda hard to say.

There's more "wardrobe malfunctions" today than 40 years ago, but fewer lynchings and church bombings...

    Let's rephrase the question:

Going down: A moral issue or common courtesy?

Since the ancient Greeks and Romans were already complaining that morality was going down, imho there are two options:

    - Morality was extremely high back then
    - Morality is extremely low nowadays

Humans have basically been humans since there have been humans. ;)

I think social acceptability and tolerance goes in cycles. For example, the seventies or how about way back in the Roman times of mass food and sex orgies in public. Humans haven't evolved so much in thousands of years, but how much we repress or let free our predisposition varies. I can tell you my 90 year old grandparents try on the surface to make everyone think they are strict Christian 100% moral people. However, I know for a fact it is just their generation that places much worth in the "appearance" of being moral. In reality, they are far from it. I think most of that generation grew up in a culture of lies. Everyone had to meet the Life magazine template of a happy church going perfect family.

Media has thrown much of our human nature out of the closet lately. However, I think there is a great effort from the religious right to put it back in the closet. Like I say, humans are humans and you can either put it in the closet and be fake or you can just be comfortable with being a human. Which church is going to be busted up next for sex scandals or misappropriating money? Or both at the same time? I think those that talk morals the most might be the ones with the most moral problems.

    Nothing new under the sun.

Each generation thinks it's the first to discover debauchery.

It just depends on what your moral standards are. Some people might say that the so called declining morality is just another manisfestation of people being liberated from traditional beliefs.

How about making the question less black and white?

The problem with comparing today with say 50 or 60 years or 400 years ago: often the legal or social consequences of certain behaviors were quite morally indefensible in themselves.

What's morally worse, to have a live/let live attitude toward homosexuals or saw them in half vertically from the crotch up? Allowing people who wish to practice witchcraft, devil worship, or "pagan" rituals to do so as long as these things don't involve influencing children, harming persons or animals, or are not a cover for some criminal activity, or, send them to a medieval torture chamber and then burn them at the stake? Pubicly torturing and lynching a black man because he approached a white woman with "immoral" intentions, where a white man who did the same thing might get his face slapped?

Maybe this is just complicating a very clear and logical question, maybe it's not. My opinion: provide a clear definition of what is "morality" before making it a yes or no proposition.

Public perception of societal morality is a function of what's making headlines.

True, but I think the question usually hits people on 3 levels:
1-What is considered "wrong" in the past I choose as my benchmark.
2-Is more of this "wrong" behavior occuring today than then.
3-Is society less outraged, or more accepting of what "I" consider wrong.

Therefor, people are free to answer this question as it suits them, and they have.
Roughly 85% have said it's going down.

Those clothes wouldn't be all over the stores if crappy parents didn't let their kids buy it.

Exactly... Living on Long Island, i saw quite a few promiscuous pre-teens and it was disgusting... Most parents let their children do just about anything and have the audacity to blame it on the schools or say that children have too much social/academic pressure these days... That's so chock full of bullsh!t, it's ridiculous... Parents dope their kids up on every medication they can get their hands on so they don't have to do any parenting... It disgusts me... Bearing children should definitely be a privilege and not a right...

As long as the hypocrisy of the ACLU agenda exists, the morality of this country will continue to fall.
