Hi me again I have a several questions about late 250 engines, I have put the distributor drives back together and have fitted new input ball races and seals and when refitting them along with their dizzy's I noted that there were no thrust washers between the bottom of the output/drive dog shaft and the bearing bush in the bottom of the housing. I did not remove any thrust washers when I took them apart and in my original 330 parts book (its mostly a 250 isn't it) no thrust washers are shown in the exploded view of the distributor drives, so do they definitely not have any thrust washers and if not why not? I took the alternator apart as the bearings were very noisy, as an aside this is a RHD GTL and LHD GTL's I have worked on had dynamo's, anyhow I need some new brushes as the originals are fairly worn, the rest of the alternator seems ok, it is a Magnetti Marelli GCA 101B and the brushes are 6mm wide by 5mm thick and were maybe 22mm long with the lead sticking out the front 6mm wide face. Lastly I have still got to repair the steel water pipes which looked pretty rough before they were blasted and after blasting have a few more holes than I expected, on this car the pipe that runs from the front of the motor down the left side and then splits to connect up to the rear of the heads has a rubber section almost above the left hand rear engine mount, replacements I have seen are in one bit so has someone cut a bit out of this one which I suspect they have, also how far apart should the front end of this pipe be from the vertical water pipe tree that sits in front of the motor, I know new ones are available but would like to keep as many original bits as I can and the new ones are quite lumpy, the only other thing is I am still wondering which Peugeot the fan was borrowed from as I need a new boss for the one I have, thanks Bill.
I just happen to have replaced mine recently. The correct side water pipe is one piece and extends 4 1/2" past the front engine mount. Steve Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi thanks for the reply, is that front vertical pipe, the one that connects to the top hose, an original part or a replacement and do you own a Lusso or was that style of pipe shared with the GTE? Also how did you find the fit or the replacement parts, I can repair the original parts and have already dealt with the front "tree", the water pump pipe is not too bad with one hole to fix but the long side pipe is not the best and although I can fix it I would like it to stay fixed, it may be better to replace rather than get stuck in the middle of nowhere if it springs a leak later on. I don't suppose you have an answer to my question about thrust washers, its obvious in use the distributor drives are pretty much flooded with oil as the return route is over the top of the rear cam bearing cap passing between the cam cover and cam cap but even so it seems odd there are no thrust washers fitted or shown in the parts book, thanks Bill.
Kare, Used the same as original material-steel. Nickel plated the 2 pipes and black wrinkle finish on the other.
Bill, Yes. The black pipe is the vertical pipe. These are for the GTE. The pipes were copied from the originals. The parts fit perfectly. But one must have the originals to copy. Although it may look easy it is not easy to get these exactly right. Especially the vertical pipe as the 4 ports have to align. My side pipe was not leaking but had about 10 pin holes brazed so I figured I would just replace all of them before I get stranded. sorry, I have nothing to add on the thrust washers.
Great choise. I have been terrified to notice that some people make these pipes of stainless steel. Extending the life span of some damned pipes is not worth the trouble as it may make the light alloy engine parts serve as a sacrificing anode!!!
My side pipe's end was rotted but I had it repaired. A similar diameter pipe was spliced on and can't hardly tell the transition point. The vertical pipe was hopeless and Greg Jones supplied me one. The Water pump piece, that's a different story. The plating shop sent me some photos after having blasted it for nickle plating and it is junk. I am hoping the flange and the bung can be reused to fabricate another. john Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi All Today I repaired my side water pipe using the same method mentioned above, I had my friend down the road put an almost ninety degree bend on the end of a section of pipe and welded it onto the original end section, the part that connects to the heads, it came out very well unfortunately although my water pump pipe looked ok after blasting with just the one feathery hole it turns out the hole thing is like tissue paper so I am having another bit of tube bent up and will graft the old fittings onto it, many thanks Bill Russell.
Hi All I thought a couple of pictures may elicit a reply in regard to thrust washers and things, I have been told the part of the fan assembly I need is not a Peugeot part so I suppose I will have to have a new boss turned up.
