Our '69 Italian delivery car was factory equipped with air. I think it should have originally had an Aspera Frigo HG700 AP compressor. Today, it has a York R208-20142 with a production date of 7-74 and what looks like the correct Italian clutch from Borletti. Before we throw any money at this part to freshen it up and make it compatible with R134, I wanted to understand our options. I see from older posts that the original Aspera may not have been a paragon of reliability, so I'm not sure I should be chasing one of those down in the name of originality. I saw suggestions from years back that some have gone with a new, better performing version of the York from TCCI or Valeo - is that still the preferred path if you want your AC to actually sort of work and look more or less right?

And the AC hoses in our car are black cloth braided lines marked "Aeroquip" as shown by the poor attached photo. Anyone know if this is correct? And if so, is there a similar appearing substitute compatible with AC usage? Finally, does the hose routing and fittings look right?

    Thanks,

some hoses today are not useable anymore. the 134A is so much thinner than air and goes through the hoses without you can check where. take too long time. but within 1,5 years about 50 % of the 134 A will go away. so you may contact a good AC shop.

the water radiator looks terrible :(. on the right side ( driving direction ) it is leaking already a little. so time to get the radiator out and repair. even it seems ( the golden shield near the cap ) that his is done once. but can not see what is stamped on the shield.

Finding a barrier lined hose that will retain R134 is the challenge we are facing. There are many dedicated AC hoses out there, but none yet that I have found that look like the original cloth wrapped versions.
Yes, the radiator needs attention, as does most everything else. The car is pretty much on its way to being completely disassembled and the radiator's turn for restoration will come soon.

    Thanks for your comments.

    Hi Rory,

Something I mentioned to Dave is that you might want to investigate exactly when they switched over to that style of radiator,

My 72 has that style of radiator (as all from the later years seem to), but many early cars have radiators that look different. (more of a "tent" shape to the top)

While I would expect an early radiator to be hard to source, you might not want to spend money fixing the existing one, if ultimately there is a motivation to replace it with a different type.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Good point, Alex - we'll certainly investigate that before throwing money at what might be the wrong part. We had a similar situation just this week when we realized that the AC compressor that we were about to ship across the country for rebuilding was a bit newer than the car.

    Thanks,
    Rory

fan dealer add on Hula dancer factory - when we used to check if AC was working we would wet two fingers and hold them up to the vents if it felt cold we knew it was on and working.

Did we just learn that the 'infamous' "Scaglietti Bumps" would provide a radiator clue. Now that we know(?) what they are perhaps we should look??!

Aren't hoses consumedables and OK to change for concours or must they be rapped ones?
