It seems Max can't leave well enough alone . . his latest idea does open the window for diesel engines in F1 !!! He's latest is a radical engine change plan.

If everyone receives the same allocation of fuel - then it is of the best interest in the teams to become fuel efficient to finish the race. I am sure all eyes will definitely be on the Audi R10 this year.

Again Max's idea that sound great for 5 year old, but completely nuts if you adult.

He is all in favor of saving costs ? Any idea how many different engine designs teams will have to test ? How many different chassis/body work/ aero packages needed for testing different type of engines ?

He Want close racing with more passing ? Yeph Ferrari's V12 will be passing Honda's 1.8 Vtech every minute.

Bad enough they degraded Le Mans. Don't need that crap in F1.

I agree, that would suck. They need to leave the fuel thing alone.

It would be nice to have just a single week go by without hearing some new BS rule. Seriously, this is getting really old. Keep the same rules for a couple years at least. Costs are never going to be below their current level if teams have to keep building new engines and chassis to accommodate the rule changes.

How could an Audi diesel in F1 be worse than Super Auguri or Midland?

You guys know that I'm quite liberal when it comes to rule changes. But the engine is where I draw the line. Has to be fuel or it is no longer F1 but some silly econo run.

Actually I don't mind Max' proposal to allow for Diesel engines. Bring them on if you like. But sadly his proposal is coupled with a limited amount of fuel. That in essence would dictate Diesel and that's where the fun stops.

What's wrong with those teams? They're just backmarkers, so what?

I have no use for Diesel engines. They're fine in a VW Passat, but please stay out of the world of racing. Whether Audi is going to win Le Mans or not, won't change my opinion. What's next? Hybrid engines? Electromobiles? Pleeze!

I'm all for it... let it roll F-1 would be back to being the height of technology... and just think of all the spin off that would eventually wind up in regular road cars... like Turbos and variable cam & valve timing did back in the 80's and 90's.... Diesels great, rotary great, 16 cyl quad turbo Bugatti great! the more the merrier...the teams will decide which path is the best, but in 5 years they could revolutionize modern automotive engines....

How about bio-fuel? I've seen that on prior F1 articles.

It's for sale at Carl's Corner just a couple miles from here - I believe that Willie's now has it in CA.

I vote NO on Diesel in F1, its bad enough that they are proposing serious cuts to research and developpement, what ever happened to F1 being the pinacle of technology?

    This latest proposition is absurd!

Never did like what Max has done with F1 so far, but I have to say, this may not be such a bad idea. I am assuming what he has in mind is as the following:

    1) No force induction of any type allowed.
    2) Limite engine displacement but not engine configuration.
    3) Re-fueling is still allowed. Only the overall volume during the race is limited, not race weekend (As in practice & qualifying not included in the overall amount).

With 1 & 2, this will pretty much omit a diesel engine from being used, as I don't believe that a diesel engine can be as powerful as a gas engine of the same displacement without some form of force induction.

Experts, please correct me if I am wrong about the rotory engines here: I am not sure how rotory engine displacement are assessed, but because of their configuration, they can give the illusion of having better displacement:power output ratio than the conventional cylinder engines. However, their thirst for fuel (Thermodynamic efficiency) is just about the same. Thus the limit on fuel used during the race will not offer them any advantages.

Not sure if this will open the doors for hybrid engines, but I think as of right now, they will not be beneficial for high speed use as in cases of auto racing, not to mention they will probably suffer greatly due to its weight.

Anyway, I will like to see varies engine configuration return to F1 as it was in the early 90's when the V12s, V10s and V8s shared the field. This will probably kill the "cost lowering", but this is F1 and not IRL or CART afterall.

How about hydrogen engines ? Fuel stops probably will be down to tire change time cause gas can equalize pressure momentarily.

You're exactly right about rotary displacement being misleading. If displacement is in fact calculated just as a piston motor the rotary engines tend to actually have twice the displacement of manufacturer claims. On top of that their thirst for fuel is greater than a piston motor due to their very poor combustion chamber and thermodynamic characteristics.

An excellent apples to apples explanation here:

Loves driving his rotary hard but thinks pistons (and even diesels!) are cool too ;)

I watched a UK "Police Camera Action" episode today, one of those police pursuit things. This episode was about the future of the car. Automatic everything and even sooner than that GPS controlling the speed of your car etc.

Max Mosley was on the progamme waffling about how unsafe the roads are and how important this technology is. I cannot believe this guy is president of the FIA.

I believe 1951 Indianapolis pole sitter was a diesel if I recall correctly.

F1 was magnificient (in my view) in the 60s with the differences in engine and chassis technology between the players. Focused attention on the manufacturers/builders and the drivers. Remember the H16 BRM, v6 and v8 and, I think, v12 Ferraris, Cosworth DFV, Climax V8.

The greater the homogeneity enforced by the formula, the greater the focus on the driver (look at NASCAR).

Today all cars look the same, different livery. Differences are subtle. Heroes are drivers. How many people know what's inside a F1 car? Does McLaren really use a Mercedes engine (it doesn't, it's built by Ilmor).

Maybe I am increasingly a dinosaur, celebrating the past, but the greatest innovations have come where people can experiment and gain an unfair advantage for a few years.

    Rant ended.
    Apologies

bio fuel is still under studies and research at the moment, if i'm not wrong. but i guess it's wayy less powerful than normal fuel..
