Membership does have its benefits.
So far, no one has offered a compelling reason to subscribe. No other automotive website I'm a member of charges, either. And, no disrespect to Rob, but I don't feel the need to fund someone else's racing. I have enough trouble funding my own. Moreover, most other sites I'm a member of (and one even a moderator, which is an uncompensated position, of course) are funded through advertising and sponsorships. So, I'm not sure I see the need for paying memberships. And, if the moderators are uncompensated and are, in effect, donating their considerable time to the site and community, I don't think it's appropriate to charge. That said, I'd be willing to consider it. May I request a trial membership for a week to see whether I'd be interested in subscribing? In the automotive context, a test drive is common prior to purchase. CW
Basically, the main perk is access into the silver &/or rossa sections. It's appropriate to charge because this site is not full of non-owners and enthusiasts, this has owners and enthusiasts who know their stuff, and isn't full of 'trolls and idiots', but it does happen. Plus, it's our way to support the site. If you don't want to subscribe, don't, it's not like we are going to care, no offense. We build 'friendships', if you would call if that $15 a YEAR is cheap.
where does the money come from that pays for your racing? BTW, not sure about your racing, but my racing is pretty cheap. I use to come out ahead with the RX8, the 355 C I do end up behind about $500 a weekend. Trust me, I understand and have no problem with users that can't afford or don't want to pay 4 cents a day. What I have a problem with is people that try to tell me how I can spend the money I make at my job. I don't tell you how to spend money you make at your job.
Point made, but it's still not a compelling argument. I really don't care about any of the benefits other than, perhaps, the private threads. But, without seeing what's in those threads, there's no reason to feel you're missing out. Right? As an example, while I'd be interested in the political threads (maybe), I'm not sure I'm willing to pay to share my thoughts on it. Or even to read others thoughts. Especially, when I can read political grist each and every day for free. This isn't a news service. It's an entertainment site. The value of this site, presumably, is in the eyeballs viewing it and the advertising. Sure there's endless junk posted by non-owners. Sure there are trolls and total loons. I'm just not sure that there's anything worthwhile in the subscribed section. Frankly, just because someone's an owner doesn't mean much to me. But, you're forming "friendships"? Sounds semi-clique-ish to me. Like I'm not a part of the subscribed club, so I'm not a friend? Uh, ok. Anyway, I'm just explaining my thought process on why I haven't subscribed. And, if I had to subscribe to all the sites I'm a contributor on, I'd be much worse off. I'm not asking for my contributions to be compensated, but I don't want to have to pay for the privilege of making them, either. CW
There is no reason to subscribe if you don't need to sell anything in the classifieds, not interested in Off Topic posts (Silver has 10x more than OT these days), not interested in Business & Investments talk (34 different threads active in 1 week), don't post many images (7.5 Mb limit for non subscribed), and you don't use Private Messaging much to talk with other users. Sounds like you might be one of those that doesn't need above, so I completely understand. With your comment about "I don't feel the need to fund someone else's racing" I don't think the above is the issue at hand though. I really think you might just have something stuck up your ass or just simply an *******.
SO DON'T SUBSCRIBE THEN! I mean really - why keep frustrating yourself in this thread? NO ONE is telling you to subscribe personally. You don't have to come here at ALL if you don't want to. All I'm trying to do is to make aware some folks who MAY NOT KNOW about Silver and above, and the "value add" you get there. If it's not for YOU (or anyone else reading this), FINE. Jedi
This isn't about how much it costs or my ability to write a $15 check. It's about VALUE. It's fine that people want to subscribe, but I'm not sure I see the reason. Maybe I will subscribe just to see what's in there, and maybe I'll see the value. Or maybe not. But, arguing that it's inexpensive, so why not just subscribe seems kind of like saying, "close your eyes and open your mouth." I can understand that there are technology costs associated with this site. But, if that's funded by paying advertisers, the subscriber revenue is excess. Which is great. I'm happy to see you make revenues and, if possible, profits. And, just to be clear, I'm not telling you what to do with your earnings. You can use them to pay the mortgage, buy a tank of gas or whatever. That's your business. I'm just wondering why I'd want to pay. I've wondered it for a while. Am I missing something? Am I going to learn something? Or, am I going to waste $15 and my time and feel foolish for doing it? I'll just tell you that my racing is self-funded at this point, and it's legally obtained. I will also tell you it's not inexpensive. I'm glad that you've found something that you like doing and can afford to do it. I don't begrudge you that at all. In fact, that's what we all should want and, hopefully, be able to do. So, I'm definitely not attacking you, personally, at all. But, also understand that money out of subscriber's pockets goes into yours for your use. Whatever it might be. I'm just saying, as poorly as I can, apparently, that I'm trying to understand why I'd want to pay. CW
The only reason was really to put the point across that IF you want people to subscribe, you have to give them a reason to. Often, when someone new turns up, the first couple of posts suggest they fill in their profile and subscribe. Don't understand why I'd do either. CW
No worries CW - I really do think it's been pretty well laid out in this thread what Silver is all about - and it's also pretty clear it doesn't appeal to you. It's all good - there is PLENTY of free activity here. All the best Jedi
OK, I believe you now, but just seems like being abrasive to be abrasive. Like Jedi said, go ahead and move along, no one is forcing you to subscribe. There are great benefits to some users, but no benefits to others. It has turned into more since then, but the only reason I started subscriptions was because so many people wanted to "donate" to the community. I refused to take donations because FerrariChat.com is a for profit business. Subscriptions was one of the cleanest ways to handle donations as a "for profit".
Looking at how many people are already subscribed and return and re-subscribe year after year, I don't think there really needs to be a reason to get the point across, for some, what the perks are, are good enough. And on the other topic, when someone new shows up, and shows great interest, we say fill out your profile so we can get to know them better, see their car history, interests etc., or just know that they aren't bluffing. To get them to subscribe also is to make sure they aren't lying, if someone is serious and just bought a Ferrari, $15 isn't going to hurt their wallet. I suggested someone who used to be a Ferrari track tester (IIRC) to fill out his profile and to subscribe because he was interesting and had a couple of really good threads about his days in Maranello.
Bump. Just re-upped my subscription, once you subscribe, it's tough to go without - I strongly recommend the 4 cents a day,
