I think the 512S is one of the prettiest race cars ever built! Here are two during scrutineering! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Love those Codalunga's. It is actually my Ebay-screenname (codalunga512) great pic. The one of the two Daytona's chasing eachother on the banking at Daytona, is now my wallpaper.
#5 is S/N 1038 of Ickx-Schetty, engine #27, gearbox #7. #6 is S/N 1044 of Giunti-Vaccarella, engine #7, gearbox #4. Marcel Massini
Do you think the fellow in the red Firestone jacket is Peter Schetty or Mauro Forghieri? (Post #402) Two more "Coda Lunga", Bellisima!! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here another from 1044 (Brands Hatch??) http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/7197/1044herbertmueller3qv.jpg
512sssss my all time favorite !!! 1006 was the best... most original best history and the one I put the most hours in behind the wheel. I did 20+ practice laps with my son who was five at the time in the passenger seat. 1010 was a beast! scared the day lights out of me! 1016 was easy and gentle. Also the first Ferrari my son ever drove in. He was just 6 months old and I pulled it around the block and parked it in the store. Now lives in France. The last time I saw it was at Le Mans after it blew by my on the Mulsane... Then nothing but a huge fire ball, white and blue smoke after it scattered its engine. 1024 ??? cant remember that one. I dont think I ever got to race it or drive it at all. 1028 was like a jewel so clean you could have done surgery on any panel! Perfect track maners etc... 1030 was beautiful but not so reliable or sorted. Probably has the second best history. 1040 was a mess but now so much better 1044 was also a mess...have not seen that one in years. Just a few of those that stirred my sould. My kids and I still get goose bumps on the weekends when we put Chad's dad's movie on the big screen at full volume. I can wait to see some them again on the track at Le Mans in July. Too bad I will be chassing their dust trails in my 2.0-liter GT and not sharing the seat time with one of my old toys! Cheers, Bill Noon
Does Chad own anything interesting himself? I saw a cool video of him some time back retelling bits and stories about the movie. --Dan
Chad, his sister and Mom sold everything off after his dad died. His sister got the 911S Steve drives in the begining scenes of the movie and Chad kept the Porsche Speedster hid Dad started racing on in the 50s. After Terry died, chad got the 911S as well. Both will go to Chad's kids someday. Cheers, Bill
Sorry missed one part of the question... I loaned Chad his dad's old 917 and one of the 512S from the movie for the scenes he did that have now been released in a couple of different videos. He took his son for a ride the same way his dad did him. Cheers, Bill
Not sure who owns it now. There was also a short tail with almost the identical paint scheme, but I like the longtails better. The longtail 907s and 908s are beautiful too. Another car that I would kill for is the Matra 640 longtail that crashed in practice at LeMans; 1968 or 1969 I think... I believe the car still exists.
The 917K in green/purple was at Goodwood last year, but I don't know the s/n as the prgramme lists the LH owned by Juan Barrazi. The unique Matra MS640 was pretty much destroyed in Pescarolo's 1969 practise crash; but in recent years Matra have built up another one which was also at Goodwood together with various other Matras (MS 620, 630, 660, 120): http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/1232/ms640fos20054ny.jpg Coincidentally, the same man, Robert Choulet, was responsible for the aerodynamics of both the Matra 640 and the 917LH. Juan still owns that 917 but it is a normal 917K and has nothing to do with the 2nd over all 1970 Porsche 917LH We sold that car, the sole long-tail in private hands in a similar paint scheme to a collector on the east coast many years ago. The car was beautiful but useless to drive in any historic event. The regular 917s are hard enough the long-tails near lethal. Ask any of the driver's who ran them in 70 or 71 and they will give you a pretty frightning picture of what a beast the 917s were. The same period driver's who sat behind the wheel will report the exact opposite of the 512s. Sam Posey told me once that on the Mulsane (Houdenaires) straight you could have put a brick on the gas pedal and gone to sleep for two minutes...the car was that easy to drive flat out. Cheers, Bill
I know that this supposed to be a Ferrari Fourm but for the purposes of this discussion here are three photos which I believe to apply. In the first you can see the differences between the two types of 917s. The second car is commonly refered to as the "pig". It was restored by my good friend Gerry Sutterfield a few back for the Porsche Museum. The second is a Gulf car in the long tail configuration. My dear friend John Wyer once told me about his great disappointment about being duped by the Porsche factory. He was told that Gulf-Wyer was the factory team and then the "Salzburg Porsche" shows up at LeMans. Finally, one of the government sponsored Matras. I am not well versed in this particular marque but do enjoy the sound these cars make. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The#57 car in the first photo has the 1970 short tail with a small spoiler at the rear of the trough; the Gulf car has the 1971 version which is subtly more curved for lower drag and has the twin fins. Gulf also ran longtails in 1971 - here's a model: http://www.pattosplace.com/slotshots/oh-Porsche917LH-Gulf-1971.JPG and here's a nice model of the green/purple 917LH: http://www2.g-7.ne.jp/~koto/gallery/917lhmak/917lhmak_016.jpg And the Matra is an MS660 - as you say, the music they make is incomparable. I love those 512 CLs - it's a might-have-been that four of them were put out of Le Mans 1970 in one crash, while the quickest one broke after 7 laps. Paul M
I must say - this is the best thread I have seen on FChat since I have been around. THANKS to all of the contributors.
Again this one was taken prior to the race so it may not have all of its' stickers. On another thread I believe I saw this car in the collection of Dr. Simione in Philadelphia? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes Dr. Simeone owns 043. He bought it in 2001 IIRC. Here is a photo I have of the car racing in Le mans off of the internet somewhere. I forget the site. Funny Simeone owns the cobra coupe and 043 that was just talked about now. Bertocchi any other Simeone pics? Any of 0710TR? Erik Image Unavailable, Please Login
