They may have tested the Enzo motor in that, but in no way is it an "Enzo Prototype".

Ferrari used the Ferrari 348 frame to test the Enzo motor. It is one of the Enzo prototypes, not in exteriour, but too test how the motor and the technical things worked out!

It's kinda cool that they used the 348 frame too test the Enzo! There must be a reason for that, I think the Enzo has 348 steering rack as well?

I too was wondering why the 348 would be used for a test chassis. I suspect the removable subframe may have something to do with it.

That's what Ferrari referred to it as when the car was sold at the Sothebys auction at Fiorano last month. Here's a recap of the auction listing from *************:

Ferrari of Washington's August newletter has a good article on this car. I cannot believe it sold for only 200K, about the price for the Enzo's engine.

This has to be the best 348 ever! LOL.

Basicly what Ferrari was saying is that they will sell the prototype Enzo engine and toss in the fully assembled 348 for free? Interesting.

Any chance the 348 was just lying around (free mule), they needed a car to put the Enzo engine in, and Bam! A 348 with 600+ horses.

it is funny because that looks better than the Enzo itself.... That combines a 348 and 355 body, with a V12 supercar chassis. If they designed that properly, it could work, because we all know the 348 and 355 are the best looking Ferraris of the 90s.

Thought i should drop in a reply here,

in 2000 I was in Italy with Brembo working on the CCM brake system which we were testing Enzo rotors and calipers on a 550.
While there I spent time with this car and others like it.
Cars like this are referred to as mules in the industry.
Underneath the body there is very little 348 left. The car is used to test and prove out concepts and designs in real-world environments. This car changed just about every week. This car tested many components for engine and suspension design. Also some engine and gearbox temperature testing if I remember right. Cars dont just appear like magic from the keebler elves, they are built up over time, and each new part design has to be validated in test mules like this car.
You might be shocked to find out what kind of car bodies ferrari parts and engines are tested in before production. Car manufacturers build up hundreds of prototypes and mules each year, but they usually get crushed or junked.
If that makes this car interesting as a collector item I cant say. But it was sure fast as hell.

    Eric
