You apparently missed the point of my post. I was saying that I don't think that every gun owner is irresponsible but if I was to base my opinion on news reports and not first-hand knowledge I'd probably come to that conclusion. Does this parallel your argument? Maybe. My family used to breed Golden's.. I had one female that would attack any dog near it (including taking down a grown German Shepherd). My 'responsible' and trained firearm enthusiast friend shot a hole through his second-story floor. There are no absolutes here.
For me I see it like this... My girlfriend and I bought a large breed of dog for our first puppy. She's a Weimaraner and comes from champion bloodlines. When being in such close proximity to a 60 pound animal, it was really important for us to know the full history of the dog. We met her parents, grandparents, etc... all were great dogs. "Pitt Bull" is a term used for three different breeds of dog. With sizes ranging by 80 pounds. Having a purebred pitt bull seems to be slightly impossible, just based on the origins of the breed. That being said. Even with all this great breeding, she's still an animal. She doesn't know her strength and doesn't realize if she is hurting us. She's only 6 months old and about 35 pounds, and my girlfriend and I are covered in little scratches and cuts. She gets excited and runs, jumps, paws, and "playfully" will bite us. I'm sure when she's full size, she'll do this for a few years as well. Now when I look at a dog like a Pitt Bull or a Rottweiler, I could only imagine how much more of a toll this "playing" would take on us. A little nip to the ear might just be unpleasant from our puppy, but from a Pitt Bull puppy who is all muscle, jaw, and teeth it might be little more. Also, since these types of dogs were bred for fighting, no matter how much breeders try to get this trait out of their nature, it'll still be there to some extent. Plus with all the backyard breeders negating any efforts to remove their aggressiveness the breed seems to be on a downward spiral. I think a dog that gets a bad rep and really shouldn't have one is the Doberman. Over the last 80 years, the breed has become smaller and a lot of the aggression has been removed. If you look at attack stats from the CDC, pretty much the case as well. They were bred as guard dogs and not fighters though.
My 'pit' is probably one of the best trained dogs I've seen.. yes, he's 110 pounds and can push me around but I usually get the best of him. If any dog happened to resort to attacking me (or another) I could have them subdued in under 10 seconds. Some are bred for fighting, just like some handguns are unregistered and used in crimes. It doesn't stop me from target-shooting though. I'm just saying that if you have a friend with one you'll probably get attached. C. Image Unavailable, Please Login
A few of my friends have them, but I just feel like people buy them to sound cool or "hard." I like the dogs but I don't understand why people choose them. I'd rather have a Rottweiler if I were looking for a dog for security purposes. I like Samoyeds and Siberian Huskies.. or any big, pretty, fluffy dog much more than mean looking ones.
Pitbulls dont have the nature to be a bad dog... one of my 3 chuhuahuas are more vicous then most pitbulls ive seen in my life.. Pits just got a bad rep from lowlifes who use them as fighting dogs. "Every year in the USA: 440,000 people die due to ciggerettes 40,000 die in car accidents 38,000 children die from gun related injuries 2,000 children are killed by their own parents 3 are killed a year by pitbulls so where does the REAL epedemic lie??? WATCH THESE....!!!!!! im sure it will change alot of minds.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmwaHMzgrKk <<< THIS IS A MUCT WATCH to understand... look at the fatcs and read the statistics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q60w9G1Htik OMG look at this man eater : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUyu2am-2sA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UasIjeRHjs
for those of you who said people should not get pitbulls simply because of their bad rep. go to the library, pick up a book. do some volunteer work at an animal hospital or even watch the animal rescue who on animal planet. bluntly what it comes down to is ignorance for those who dont like pitbulls bc their "attack dogs"... its like racism, those who are uneducated are those who keep the negativity still going. theres so many attacks by labs, german shepards, retievers, akitas, huskys etc... but how come only the pitbull is the only "attacker" that stays in everyones mind?? Yea, some pitbulls may have a violent nature due to chemical imbalances JUST like some humans.. but then again so do other dogs.. one of my chihuahuas has some sort of imbalance where he gets very angry very easily and tugs on the pants of my friends as they walk by... common ankle biter, and he grew up in one of the most loved dog familes... sometimes **** just happens and you get a bad seed i guess... however i still LOVE all my dogs equally. and i will be getting a pure black female pitbull sometime in the near future.
