Thats exactly why I like to avoid those websites. They never seem to provide in depth details about the hotel you're staying at or its accomodations; same thing applies with air fares. It's better to do devote time to research and buy your ticket directly from an airline or hotel instead to avoid problems like this.

I just booked my honeymoon, mostly through Travelocity. I was extremely concerned about what hotels we stayed in and found a great website that had a ton of hotel reviews:
    www.tripadvisor.com

Orbitz is good at finding the lowest fares. But, after I see which flights are the cheapest, I always go directly to the airline. Not only do I avoid using scumbag Orbitz (they use code to bypass Firefox's pop-up blocker), but I also save the $10 Orbitz convenience fee.

Wow. Them are some strong words there junior!

You must first seek to understand Orbitz' business model. They are catering to people who do not have near-infinite amounts of time to book their travel and look up every hotel website in a 5 mile radius of where they plan to stay in the city of their destination.

Fine to go directly to the airline, but know that it's people like you that escalate the convenience fees. Each time Orbitz does a search, it costs them money. So when people abandon ship like you, it increases COGS without the S (sold) part of the equation, which means.... more overhead.

Think about what you are doing on the aggregate of 1,000,000 transactions per month.

    It matters.

I did not sign a contract that said that by using Orbitz's website, that I am obligated to use their booking service.

If there is a risk of this happening to their business model, then that must be incorporated into the costs of doing business. If they go broke because of this, then their model was flawed to begin with.

So, a**holes like me abandon ship, causing Orbitz to raise their service charge. Fewer people use Orbitz, until it goes out of business. Without the tool available, people have trouble getting good fares from the airlines. A new company comes along and provides low-fare finding tools.

    God bless the free-market economy.

Agreed. No doubt Hotwire.com is a superior model. IAC vs. Cendant though, so it's to be expected.

This is exactly why I will never use Orbitz. They've been the only pop up ads I've gotten with using FF and I simply can't stand them because of that.

Did you check out their FAQ on their pop-ups?
    http://faq.orbitz.com/cgi-bin/orbitz.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?search=1&p_faqid=537

Basically they're saying "screw you, we dont care if you like our pop-ups or not, if you hate them so much download yourself a pop-up blocker and we'll keep our pop-ups."

That really pisses me off. Shows how much they care about their customers instead of eliminating pop-ups completely. Obviously people are upset about it and that's how they remedy the problem?? By asking you to download a pop-up blocker? What a slap in the face.

    Screw orbitz...

That guy shouldn't be pissed at Orbitz, he should be pissed that, for 30 bucks, he added a hassle to his international itinerary.

i've used Orbitz for every plane ticket i've purchased in the last two or three years... Never had a problem, never had a pop up ad and they leave an automated message on my cell phone reminding me what time my flight is, what gate it's at, what the flight number is, etcetera...

I have the orbitz ads blocked here. You just have to add a line to the firefox config. I've included the instructions below.

    http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/007682.html

    TLDR:
    (1) Type "about:config" (no quotes... on any of these steps) in the address bar
    (2) Right-click in the resulting config page somewhere and select "New -> Integer"
    (3) Type "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" in the resulting dialog, hit "OK"
    (4) Type "2" in the next dialog

This feature was included in 1.0 but disabled by default; they're looking for feedback on how well it works so they can decide whether to turn it on by default for 1.1 etc.
