Just wondering, would others agree that the F348 is the most underrated Ferrari ever? If not, what model is? (Obviously not by those who own them, or hav owned them.)
For anyone that has owned or ridden in a 348 the answer must be the 348. No love, but what a great car! BT
I believe that the Ferrari Mondial is the most underrated Ferrari ever. It already got mixed/bad reviews from the press when it came out. That never really changed. A true Ferrari underdog! Regards
Good question,I would say the 348,but to put another slant on it,what is the most overated Ferrari. For me it's got to be the 328 on looks alone.
underated cars are underated for a reason.... Like it of not its not just the way are car drives that makes it great, its the whole ownership experiance. When I bought my 328 a 348 was well within my budget, didnt even look at one. I was buying a dream and it had to be complete. so if you want to ask such a question, it can't be so vauge. Underated drive? That might be the question you wanted to ask....
Sorry Jas but its the mondial t. Same engine as a 348, marginally slower, carries 4. Not as good looking but still looks good (IMO). Good handling too.
I would counter with saying the Boxer is the most under rated Ferrari. It has a classic Pininfarina alloy body, a wonder looking, sounding and performing flat-12 engine, it is the most comfortable and reliable mid-engined exotic of its era, yet it still has a hard time selling for much more than a top 348 Spider in todays market. The so-called Ferrari 'experts' of today bad mouth it in various publications claiming it is not worth owning; based in part due to expensive maintenance. However, I have now owned 6 Ferraris over the last 20 years and actually enjoy my current BB512i more than any other Ferrari I have owned and have had fewer maintenance problems than I did with my former 328 and 348! So all you EXPERTS out there, why do you dislike the Boxer so much?
Mondial and 365 GTC/4, and all 2+2s Looking at recent prices, I do not think Boxers are that under rated anymore; unfortunately for me.
I would have to say the Mondial as well. Most for some reason do not even consider it a real Ferrari. I like the looks of some of them.
I'm biased, but I say the 330 2+2. For similar money to a 348, you get the "real" Ferrari engine -- the Columbo V-12 -- in full 4 liter, 300 bhp glory. But then again, it's Vintage, not Classic... Image Unavailable, Please Login
underated or underpriced ( or underpowered)?...??? looks? drive? Anyway, for me it is the Mondial T...A real "enzo" car and Ferrari's only ever full 4-seat mid engine cabriolet...also the world's only full 4-seat mid engine cabriolet ( there just might be a "front engine...mid engine" -- convertibles..if there are any out there ..the aston..maybe ...) I thinkg Enzo's might also be underrated for the F-1 technology and all around performance...Boxer's were the world's best HP bang for the buck..but no longer.... since we are on it..how about the most overrated....for me it would be the Dino 246GTs....a fiat at 355 prices...but if it is not a Ferrari then for sure it is the most overated Fiat!!
As a pure driving car I completely agree that the 348 is highly underrated. It possesses the handling, braking and power of modern ferraris while still retaining a certain rawness with the manual steering and cluky shifter. I rank it over the 328/308 in performance abilities while not possessing the "very easy to drive" feeling from the 355.
With out question the 348. I have never heard of another modern F-Car getting such a bashing. So many people just seem to pass along this notion that they are not up to the task. Unfortunately so many who pass along this myth have never even driven one, they do it because they read it some where. In real world driving a 348 can and will hang with the 355's or 360's and mine has. No doubt in a straight line run you can not top HP, but once in the twisties it is another story all together.
I agree with the 348. It's a nice and fun car.. I remember when it came out. Magazines were comparing it to an MR2 and I read one article where they compared it to GMC Cyclone truck of all things. They even went so far as to put a beer keg in the passenger side of the 348 comparing it's "hauling" capacity to a stupid truck... Brutal.
308 GT/4 A lot more fun to drive than a 308 and with a bit of aftermarket changes it looks even great. Also highly underrated: 400i and 456
T coupe is faster through the corners though. The 400/412 are probably more under rated than the T coupe.
My thoughts exactly. You beat me to it Andreas. The 308 GT4 had same power as carb 308, and better balance and handling than 308 GTS/B. The 365 GTC was just voted #7 on Forza's top ten drivers. Underrated? What did you want, top 5? 348 maybe most underrated on Fchat site. Or at least the most dogged car on this site.
I dunno about the Mondial T being underrated. Perhaps only by the (with all due respect) uneducated on that particular version. Most every (if not EVERY) article I have read on the Mondial T seems to rant about the vehicle. I cant recall narry a bad comment. I just think that some people associate the Mondial T with the earlier versions, which unfortuniately get little respect. I actually luv them all. Additionally, I have not heard too many underratings on the 348 (except at this web spot!). I would say that the 400i would be my guess as "most underrated."
Not sure about that. The reputable dealers and independents (mechanics and brokers) I talked to over the past year while car-hunting invariably gave the 348 a thumbs down. I lost count of how many times people told me "355 or 328" if you want a five-figure Ferrari. I actually think you hear more discussion of the 348's virtues here than anywhere. F-chat'ers seem to recognize the car's good points and know how to cope with the bad. The premise of this thread is too vague, though. "Underrated" with regard to what? If it's the whole experience (driving, rarity, looks, significance) versus price, I might agree with the post about the Boxer. Among the last of the handbuilt Ferrari's, '80s icon, but seemingly less loved than the 308/328... it seems like a ton of history and engineering artwork for the price of a 355.
You have a good example, consider yourself lucky. I have heard so many horror stories about the Boxer, and in my lifetime, I have only seen one good one, in Nevada but priced right at $140K. That was a perfect car. The ones selling for under $90K are always a huge gamble, that's why they have a such a small following. In many ways, the later TR is an all around better car with all the kinks worked out. I personally think the 348 is the most underrated, I can say that as a 3 time owner in 9 Ferraris.
