I had a PPI done at Algar back when I was shopping for my car and the Master Tech there who did it used one of these when doing the compression test. I haven't seen any pictures of it being used or the results it records on the little cards since then.

I have been on the hunt for one and finally got it. It is in mint condition and a real piece of German craftsmanship.

The tech there told me that this is what he has to use when sending sompression results to Ferrari. He made a couple mods to the connections that make it a bit easier to use single handedly but I should be able to mimic those.

Anyone want to have a compression test done? :)

    Nice find. :)

The compression tests I've had done at Ferrari service centres came with the motometer report card.

Very cool Bob. Wish I lived closer to take advantage of your offer. On second thought, I wished you lived closer to me. I'm allergic to snow and extreme cold.

We can arrange a loan program for it.

After quite awhile searching ebay for one one of these, I was finally able to get a very minty Sun Leak Down tester. An old school instrument but it is the one that was used by the Ferrari Master Tech at Algar that did a PPI for me a couple years ago.

This and the Motometer at least put my testing instruments at the highest standard.

Bob - have you used this yet? I remembered you got it and was thinking about getting one myself so I'm curious what your thoughts are? I'm referring to the Motometer as I have a Sun leak tester that Socal hooked me up with (Thanks, Tim :) ) but I've not played around with it yet.

Never cared for them. Among other things I always considered them a fix for a non existent problem. And the measuring gauge itself never impressed me for their accuracy. Makes a nice display.

Ferrari never required them in the past. Shows their level of trust these days.

Bob, it's crappy in the NE - head in the garage and give them a run. Not sure what adapters you have but you may need to alter one as some don't fit our heads. Also, get a remove starter switch. Cheap and great to use. I've not traced the starter signal wire on a 5.2 but perhaps getting to the starter is easier than a 2.7. If you want to trace the wire, I can tell you which connector and pin it is on a 2.7, perhaps the same on a 5.2

Brian the motometer of the sun unit?

It does make a nice display but in my case the guy I bought it from must have lived in a closet with his motometer and an 5 pack a day habit. It stinks so bad the cabinet in the garage still smells like it.

I got the correct adapters for it and a quick disconnect and length of hose like Tony had. I'm sure there will be a learning curve.

I think old tools are cool like an antique beam torque wrench. Made in china they are not.

Bob - the "correct" adapter is more than the proper threads. It has to fit within a small counterbore of the cylinder head. Hold your adapter up against a spark plug to check. I don't have the measurements handy or I would post them.

FWIW - I sent a text to IMO, the best tech in the industry and asked if he likes the Motometer. He said "not really, let's talk tomorrow and I'll explain"

Here is a photo of the adapter from an OTC compression tester turned down to fit within the cylinder head counterbore. I don't have the dimensions handy but I found this pic on my PC.

Motometer. 30 or more years ago they were quite popular and we used them a lot. Turned into more trouble that they were worth. The more conventional gauges with pretty bullet proof gauges took over for good reason. As nice as that one is I'd just put it on display.

The old Sun leak down unit is very nice. For functionality I really want a 2 gauge unit though.

Totally. My bicycle tool kit is a fine piece of Italian engineering. I hardly ever open the case anymore, as modern standards have made most of these tools obsolete, but they're a work of art.

We have also reached the stage where it is necessary to plug some bicycles into a laptop to diagnose drivetrain issues.

    That rates as high compression.
