My insulation over the motor on my TR was deteriorating rapidly, in cleaning the car last night I covered the engine bay with a drop cloth and ripped it out. I saw a recent post on renewing the insulation but in looking at other TR in the 88-91 range I saw many did not have it (various eBay listings and engine posts). I know the motor gets extremely hot but is the insulation really necessary?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

My 1990 TR's engine cover/third brake light enclosure looked raw and unfinished without the insulation. The insulation is probably useful for the protection of the light and maybe even the cover itself. I am sure that it gets very hot under there. I purchased the replacement stuff.

From what I have seen, no - the insulation is NOT absolutely necessary. My 87 TR didn't have it, but my 89 does. I posted a while back about installing new insulation to the underside of the engine cover. They have some nice - yet low cost - stuff on the market that is somewhat formable and goes on nice with some adhesive spray. I've grown to like the look of the foil insulation - it brightens up the engine bay when the bonnet is open.

If you don't replace it the paint on the rear cover will fade quicker...

That's just plain ridiculous. My car is 22 years old with no insulation and the cover is not faded one bit.
