My engine is nearly finished on the dyno, it topped at 209 hp, the Superformance air cleaner delivered about 5 of the total hp

There is not much to photograph, it looks like any other on the rig, all that is different only Superman can see: it is now 2500 ccs, better cut to the cams, slightly larger valves, better pistons and rods, jetting corrected, the low restriction air cleaner on, the stock carbs and exhaust, that's about it, frankly I am surprised with the output as I have always heard at bone stock they typically are about 180 hp M

Tony: 6850 rpm after which torque and hp declined, but that was by design, I wanted the tractability of a very strong "driving range" engine with lots of power where I will drive it vs focusing the horsepower above 7000 which would have made the lower end horrible like a full up race car, M

    Michael,

By Superformance air cleaner, do you mean just the Superformance air filter element? That seemed to be the only non-stock item on their site.

I wonder now how much the stock Stratos version, which was rated at about 190HP, really produced, with its different cams and induction system.

    Many thanks.

Andy To clarify this engine is in my 2.4 Fiat Dino Spider, their air cleaner assemby is what I installed M

    Hi Michael,

Since the motor isn't that photogenic, how about sharing some pictures of the car with us. I remember the car. I am happy you have it.(Though I was coveting it.) It must be one of the really good ones.

    Enjoy the open roads!

It seems odd to me that you woulnd'nt show pics on a motor that you have done so much to. Clearly this is a forum where things like this are shared with pictures. Strange.

Champtc I thought the data would be of some slight interest, yet another picture of 2.4 liter engine assembled is of no particular importance. Stan it is a very nice example, and it is now mechanically as nice as it is cosmetically, there are some pics of the car on Tom Yang, will likely bring it to Reading, hope to see you there, M

Well , here is mine and I am dreaming of finishing it...so really any pics prove 1) inspirational & 2) educational!! I have to wait until my front plate is machined (the water pump deeply scored it), the flywheel & front pulley balanced. I thought I would pick em up today but the machine shop isn't ready. I guess I am anxious to get it together & running. Thanks for your patience with my requests.

Very nice! Did you replace the sodium filled valves?

    michael,
was it the inlet or exhaust - or both that failed?

I found that the exhaust side pit and degrade.

    Adrian,
When the engine is back in etc I’ll set two advance curves - one performance, the other emissions/town curve, via a toggle switch (haven’t figured where this should be situated - any ideas?).

I’ll put the car on a dynomometer to fine tune and reprogram with PC.

It was not pit/degrade It took two separations of the head from stem (amazingly both at idle, fresh off of runs so the damage each time was minimal) to get into my thick head to replce them with all steel valves

On my '74 GTS I had the valves redone but they were from Dennis McCann & were new stock sodium filled. I was told that the stainless steel did not dispel heat as the sodium filled ones were intended to do. On the '71 Gt that I am doing now the exhaust valves had been replaced by the PO but I don't know what they were replaced with. Is it only the exhaust valves that go? I have sort of gone round & round on this & can't quite figure out the answer. I replaced the valves on the '74 out of sheer terror as it was my first Dino and I had no clue. Frankly I still don't! But they have been replaced. I guess if they break I will get another chance at rebuilding the engine which I have really enjoyed!

Depends on what your doing with the car. sodium filled was the preferred way to go. Alfa's used it, other too I'm sure. Still who knows. maybe better materials available to today. Maybe the valves would have gone the way of the dodo anyway. Wrong timing, mixture who knows. i'm sure it is not that big a deal.

Paul, I noticed the orientation of your motor mounts, both front and rear. Seems to me, according to the factory Parts Manual for your serial number, as shown in TAV. 2, you've got both sets upside down. Item #2, the support bracket, is correct in both, but the rubber part, item #67 "Supporto Elastico" is inverted according to the picture. I've wondered about this "factory" orientation because if I do it as pictured, the heat shield (Item #15) on the front mounts can not be properly mounted because the shield is too tall and is crushed when the mounting bolt is tightened. Also, the clearance for the shifter rod coming out of the transaxle is tight or worse relative to a structural cross-member. Are you having that problem, too? Anybody else notice this problem?

    Bill

    Bill, thanks for your observation.

I dont have the car at home , it being at the workshop so I cant go and check it right now.

I didn't actually fit the mounts, but I'll check it out and let you know the outcome (ps the engine is still some weeks from going back in).

I did lighten up the image I posted and then checked the mount on the Superformance site; theirs appear to be the same profile as TAV 2/67 whereas mine look a little different in profile.

May just be the image but Ill let you know.
    Paul.
