Andretti, Piquet, Nakajima, Foyt, Rahal, Mears, Earnhardt, Senna, Fittipaldi, Petty, Villeneuve, Donohue, Gurney, Jones, etc. These are names from motorsports today.

Isn't amazing how these names continue to recycle as if a child was born to race cars and no other choice was considered? I started seriously watching motor sports when I was 11. I've been to Indianapolis, Daytona, Monza, Monaco, LeMans, Sebring, and these same names from a different generation were on the grid over the last 35-40 years!! Now Michael Schumacher has a son that is racing karts.

I find this to be facinating.

    What names am I missing??

I actually find it quite sad.

I do not think that the "special something" that makes guys like Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher and others is hereditary. It does not pass from father to son. So when you see the "same names" showing up in racing, it highlights how it takes money and connections to make it in racing. I believe anyone, with enough practice, can become a good golfer, a good car racer, a good baseball player. It takes that extra special something to be one of the best. Unfortunately, because it takes giant sums of money and good connections to make it in racing, the pool from which the best emerge is much smaller than it might otherwise be.

How many amazingly good racers have we never heard of because they didn't have the money or connections component to their career, despite being brimming over on the talent side? That's what makes it sad....

Agreed. I think we've seen enough examples of how it isn't in the genes, even laterally. Michael Andretti was decent, John and Jeff not so much, Marco we don't know enough about. Richard Petty was the King on the track, Kyle's greatest accomplishments have been his admirable projects off the track. Jackie Stewart is a legend, and while Paul wasn't much behind the wheel, at least he had the sense to jump out and have a go as an owner. Michael Schumacher! Ralf Schumacher? I also agree that most anyone can get to that 9/10 point as a driver with enough work. Only the greats find the extra tenth. I don't think there are any 10/10 racers in major open wheel right now.

    Lessens the sport, IMO.

True, but I also think the promoters et al, love it because name recognition is marketable. If Bruno Senna and Romain Grosjean were equal drivers, I might take Senna because of all the free press.
