torn between the treo700p or the Q
the Q isn't touch screen, if that's important to you. i have the PPC6700 with sprint, and it's wonderful. The only concern you might have is the limited software selection of Win Mobile 5.. i have friends with the 700p and w...the p is better by far, if oyu like PalmOS, because of it's speed and compatibility. WM5 still has some issues. Who's your provider?
i have verizon. i like palm os mostly. but from all the reviews of the Q it acts like a blackberry with a toggle on the side
I have to agree with Cicada, i had the PPC6700, but i had some hardware trouble with it, so i just got a blackberry. I like it, but i heard some good things about the treo700p, so i would pick that one.
There are roumors about an iPhone or an iPDA coming out at the big Apple show next month. You may want to wait...!
Are they going to be similar to the smartphones and the blackberry? What service do you know will carry them, uhmmm interesting
i may upgrade to that mac handheld, if the rumors are true...but depends on who carries it. Sprint still has the best and fastest data plan and network out of everyone else. Tmobile's EDGE isnt quite up to speed yet, and while Verizon has EVDO, it's significantly more expensive than sprint. im paying about $20/mo for unlimited text and data on my PPC6700.
i still have my PPC and love it. the firmware update added a lot of functionality nad stability to the phone. the phone now supports push email, so you dont have to check your email manually or have it scheduled to check every X minutes. [so it now acts like the blackberry]. the only thing is, you have to be connected to an exchange server [i think...i dont use push email, nor do i have an exchange server].
I agree, the Q is garbage. I checked it out and it seems like a novelty item. Ended up buying the 6700 instead, which I've become quite knowledgable about and has been my new favorite toy the past month. If you're interested PM me and I can try to arrange a great deal for you. The phone for $300, and a phenominal plan (mine is $55 a month for 1250 minutes, unlimited internet, unlimited text, unlimited nights/weekends, free mobile-to-mobile, and full insurance). Only drawback to the 6700 is battery life, but that can be fixed with a 2800mAh battery for $70.
Agreed about the firmware. Cicada, have you done any additions to the phone? New battery, software, other toys?
I bought an early edition Q and had multiple issues and brought the phone back 4 times in 15 days. Finally, on the fifth Q and I'm happy with it. It's not a PDA, but more a phone/email tool with document viewing/internet capabilities. It's certainly not for a power user, but it does the job well.
I've got a Treo 650 right now, and I went to look at the Q. Very nice design, but the screen is small and the fact that there is no touchscreen killed it for me. I'm thinking about a 700w but I may wait for some further updates to it before getting one.
all ive installed on it, are some registry tools, some today screen plugins, and Agile Mobile [IM client]. ive got a 2g MiniSD in it, and that's where i install most of my programs to...before, i'd install them to main memory, and the phone would act REALLY sluggish. as far as the battery, i havent upgraded yet. I havent looked into it much, but from what i remember, the extended battery adds additional bulge to the phone, which i don't want -- have htey come out with any higher-capacity batt. that shares the same size with the stock battery?
Only a 1500mAh I believe. I don't mind the extra bulge, I can post a pic later with it, but IMHO its worth it. I've done all that plus a couple extra programs and Slingbox. If you don't know what a Slingbox is and are into technology..get to know it!
how is the quality on the slingbox and the 6700? ive thought about picking one up, as ive known about it for a while, and i see it every time i go to CompUSA
It's actually pretty good. If you want you can download the Slingbox Mobile software (there's a 30-day trial on the website) and test it out on my rig. PM me if you're interested.
awesome. i'll contact you sometime soon. how much does the slingbox unit cost? [i haven't paid much attention, i just see it around, and am familiar with what it does] any monthly fees after, or just the cost of the unit?
The unit retails for $200, although I got it on rebate at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $150. Just the cost of the unit (and the mobile software is an additional $30). The way it works is you can hook up any connection, Coax, RCA, etc.. to the unit then it streams the video over the internet. Only one connection can be made at a time, however. The unit also comes with an IR sensor that you can hook up from the Slingbox to an IR sensor on another device to control it remotely via the Slingbox client.
