Many, many light years ago, I tried to buy the FML. Even then, I was told the Cavallino magazine was a boat anchor. For all of you who want to keep the magazine the same, how much are you willing to pay per issue? $10? $100? $1,000?

    Money talks.

I wouldn't think the Barneses would have the capacity or even the motivation to sustain a boat anchor over this many years. That remark could have been a bit of competitive sniping.

    I’d pay $10/issue, I guess. I think I’m paying more than that already. I don’t really remember.

I do know what I’d pay for a “digital subscription”:

So you're saying Cavallino magazine isn't worth anything? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say. If so, please feel free to clarify. Thanks.

Nothing stays the same. Trying to do a print magazine today is tough. If I was a jillionaire and wanted a vanity project, sure. But I'm not a jillionaire.

Truth is we're dinosaurs. I came of age in the '60s. I started riding motorcycles (Honda 90s) when I was 14. Did we do a lot of stupid things, you betcha. In fact, I didn't start using seat belts until I had kids in the '80s. Nobody did. Imagine that. No seatbelts. The horror.

Before Dave Seibert died, I tried to get him interested in putting down his memories of what I call the "Bohemian Years." From the mid-60s, after Ferrari stopped racing at Le Mans to say before Enzo died in the '80s. This was a period when nobody in the US cared about these old POS Ferraris except for maybe 500 people, if that many. Dave said he had a lot of cool stories to tell, but he questioned whether anybody cared. He didn't think the effort would be worth it. Too late now, huh?

Time moves on. I don't blame the Barnes for selling. In fact, I wonder why they waited so long.

    Thanks.

In spite of that, I truly hope the print edition continues. I will be a subscriber as long as it's offered. Unless it turns into Forza . . . . .

    Me: zero.

Digital is complete and total b.s.. Why? Because two or three years later the links don't work anymore. Just look at all the hundreds and thousands of links posted here on fchat, the vast majority doesn't work anymore (to be very clear: I am NOT blaming ferrarichat for this!!).

Me: minus zero! They’d have to pay me.

When you consider who bought them one would assume they will inevitably shift the focus to digital. Hopefully they will have a print option for us old guys ;). The real problem with going digital is when you look at the Autoblog, Motor1, etc. they are focused on being “first to report” with quality, well written articles from an informed basis a distant second. Lol, most articles about vintage Ferraris have the value of the car mentioned in the first paragraph or some type of click bait sensationalism. Worse, most are “written” by hipster doofus soy boys who think minivans are cool and have never turned a wrench. :)

That approach won’t work with Cavallino. You need the same revered, knowledgeable writers and photographers with their extensive real world experience. It’s always been about the substance before style with Cavallino. That is what makes it unique and THE journal of Ferrari history. I’m sure if John is involved he will make sure they stay on track.

thankfully I saw this ahead and starting 20 years ago we forced images to be uploaded to our server and not just image linked like other forums. look at all of those car forums and even 5+ years ago more than half the image links don't work.

honestly, 99.9% of forums just did IMG tagging because everyone did. first of all the admins never thought of retaining images as historical archives like I did. second no one considered how ugly and disjointed it would make old threads look. you can't believe how much grief I would get in the early years for not allowing IMG tagging, users just didn't understand as every other car forum allowed it.

the first concern 20 years ago memory was expensive, but I sucked it up and it wasn't long before memory wasn't expensive. we're up to hundreds of hundreds of gigabytes now. the second concern was copyrights, but luckily we had Whart around in the early days and and that's the law he practiced. Simply in your Terms of Use you just say #1 don't post copyrighted stuff and #2 if you have the copyright and want it taken down, then let us know and we will (that hasn't happened in 10+ years). The national laws around Internet Services Protection really helped too as clearly defined that posters are liable for what they post and not the hosts.

Print magazines face different issues from newspapers, and specialised print magazines have a different business model to general ones. In many cases, the number of copies of print magazines sold has held steady, even for titles like Vogue in many territories. And Vogue is not bought by old men, it is bought by young women.

The commercial challenge is more from advertising revenue fragmenting. Once, if Zegna wanted to promote its suits, they had to be in certain magazines. Now they may feel like they can go it alone, directly.

Print magazines with a loyal reader base that is wealthy, willing to pay for unique content, and interested in sponsored events, can have a strong future as the cornerstone of a business ecosystem. Without the print magazine, the brand around it (Cavallino, or whatever other brand) would have less value and loyalty. And it also means that it is possible in these specialised situations for a high-value print magazine to actually make money of itself. More like the specialised art and coffee table book sector, which is doing pretty well in many cases.

I imagine that is why Cavallino will not be halted within the next 12 months. If it is, please someone write to me!

I wouldn’t mind seeing Cavallino under a responsible European stewardship, faithful to its long held emphasis on marque history, not a bit. In fact it’s the only one of the many automotive magazines I read that is owned by an American entity.

My six-years-younger sister acquired her interest in cars from the magazines I’d left in the loo.....

In the late 80s the number of print copies of Cavallino was just a tad under 14000 it is now less than half of that at around 6500 per issue. I guess the writing is on the wall, at those numbers I don’t see how Mr. Barnes can still make a profit even at 14000 it had to be a labor of love. I for one will always be great full that he did keep it going.
