Just bought a new 50" plasma to replace an old 42". I want to hang the TV on the wall because I don't know that my entertainment console can hold the additional weight and also because I think it just looks better. I understand there are really 2 ways to go about this: (i) cut 2 holes in the wall to run all the cables (including power cable) through thr wall from the tv height to just above the floor or (ii) install a new AC power outlet behind the mounted tv and various wall plates to accomodate HDMI, Component, etc.

Clearly option 1 seems much easier and less expensive. Option 2 more than likely will be in compliance with building safety codes (not really an issue for me but possibly when I sell the house).

Keep in mind this is for my family room, not a full-blown theatre room. Has anyone done this before? Which route did you go? I guess there is also a hybrid of 1&2 in which you install a new power outlet but fish the A/V cables through the wall.

Got any pics of your work?

    Thx

I went for option #2 when I mounted a Samsung 26" LCD in our billiard room - will post a photo later of what it looks like behind the television. If you already have an outlet at the floor level between the same studs that you want to mount the tv on, its pretty quick and easy to add a new outlet yourself. All you will need is an 'old' work electrical box, some romex (depending on local codes) and a new outlet and cover. If you want to move the outlet over a stud or two, it becomes a bigger job with more holes in the sheetrock to patch. I actually did mine with the outlet in one half of the box and my RG-6 in the other half.

Attached it the photo of how I ran the electrical, RG-6 and phone line for the Samsung LCD and how it looks. Note that I also ran a phone line in case I wanted to add a satellite receiver behind the LCD.

definitely fish everything up if you are capable. depending on the situation, you could also fish down from the ceiling. as long as you do the electric properly, you can stay within building codes. not really difficult.

Wetpet - great advice - In my case, it was actually easier to pull power from the billiard light in the center of the ceiling than it would have been to pull it from two studs over on the wall. The message here - look at all your options.

We had our wall unit built with a reinforced panel that was built to hold the TV, no problems.

We had an electrician install a plasma in a bedroom, it was $300 for everything--moving the electric and cable and mounting the TV, and a permit. Contractors are working cheap these days.
