Mounting a Starter Heat Shield

    I removed the damaged heat shields from my headers and now plan to have the pipes powdercoated. I thought I'd seek some extra protection for my starter, just because, so I bought a starter heat shield that apparently is standard on Euro cars with wrapped headers but not US cars. The parts diagram seems to show that the shield can mount to a US block, but does anyone know for sure? Also, where are the mounting points? The diagrams don't illustrate the upper attachment points, although the holes seem to line up with the header flange studs. Any pics out there? Thanks.

    Yes the top 2 holes are fitted with 2 of the header nuts. These nuts are quite fiddly to get on because the shield itself blocks access.

    I'm definitely ceramic coating the headers. Not sure if I NEED a heat shield as well, but I ain't pulling the headers again at a later date if it turns out I do, so I'm doing it preemptively. There are heat shields for the fuel tank, cross-over pipe, alternator and harmonic balancer. May as well cover the last sensitive component.

    Andy, how would that work? If you use the header studs, you'd either have to mount the shield first, then the headers - which would prevent the header gasket sealing for two cylinders - or you'd have to mount the headers with the heat shield under them but the mounting tabs on top of them? This seems logistically impossible.

    The shield is mounted over the header flanges. So header does not have to come off, only 2 nuts, then shield fitted on the studs and the nuts replaced.

    Note the shield covers the starter not the header. So the 2 nuts are the lower ones on the header flange.

    Where can I get my headers ceramic coated, preferably in Canada, as I now have them off and NO-ONE can tack weld the rattling heat shields back to the headers, so I'm told, and they seem to never have been welded from new, just tight fitted. So I'm in need of some info so I can proceed quickly and get back on the road. I'm certainly not planning to remove these headers again! PLEASE reply if you can point me in the right direction! What if I just removed the shields and installed the headers? I'm pretty sure that's not a good idea. Ceramic coating inside and out, but where???? Thanks, Dennis

    The biggest commercial name in US is jet-hot. Also hear good things about Zircotec. We discovered this year at World of Wheels a local Chicago company called Lo-Ko Coatings that does amazing work for half the price of the big national advertisers. If welding is what you want, just Google a local heliarc service. Aluminum welding requires different special equipment that auto shops tend to shy away from, but should be doable. You also can order fresh heat shield mounting hardware from Ricambi or Rutlands if you want to go for tighter attachment. Otherwise, chances are you'll be sending your gear out of town somewhere to get done.
