When I started my car to move it today , a bunch of mouse nest material flew out of the driver's side tailpipe. I found some holes chewed in my Block-IT car cover (soft indoor only cover). Lots of that material in with the nest stuff!

Anyway, I have never had this problem before and have only had the car about 2 years. As I let the car idle before pulling it out of the garage, I placed my hand near the outlet of both sides of the exhaust. The air pressure of exhaust coming out of the passenger side was very stong and clear. The pressure on the driver's (mouse) side was weak and kinda smokey. Smoke could be from sitting for the past few months?

Is there normally a big difference in the exhaust pressure from one side to the other on a 328? Is this likely mouse related? If so, what should I do? Under the rear deck everything looked fine.

    Any suggestions?

Car seemed to run fine for the few minutes I had it running. No idiot lights or anything out of the ordinary.

    Did you smell roasted mouse?

Geez, one more thing for me to worry about.

I'm gonna have to wrap my tailpiles with something to keep rodents out in the winter.

    DANG.

As to the other issue. I don't know what I'd do if I discovered this mess up my tailpipe. (That doesn't sound quite right. I hope you all know what I mean.) Can you poke around with a coat hanger, and maybe clear the obstruction?

Actually the right side being stronger is correct. My mondial 3.2 is the same way and I asked and did a search when I first purchased the car and many others' exhaust is the same. Mice hate mothballs. Put a bunch around the doors and openings to your garage etc. Just be careful if you have dogs as some may think they are cookies.

You may have heard of the term "Blowing Out The Carbon". Well this is just a little different from that, but basically the same concept.

coarse steel wool stuffed into the tailpipe & other openings is a traditional way of keeping meece out.

All the 3x8 exhausts blow about 2x as much air thru the passenger side as thru the driver's side.

If you can't get anything out by fishing around, & Since you've got good flow thru both sides, take a long fast drive to burn the carbon out so to speak.

We get mice every winter looking for a nice warm car to hide in. I've used poison, electronic soundwave devices, mothballs but NOTHING works better than the good old mouse trap.

Put a little peanut butter on them, smooth peanut butter sucks, they just lick it off without setting the traps. Let it harden or use the crunchy kind. Mice will always come out looking for the good stuff. Place them on perimeter walls, that is where they always travel.

Has worked well at our cabin and home and storage facility for well over a decade.

Maybe some of the folks in the "vintage" section could use the mousehair!?

Yeah, the un-even exhaust pressure is normal but you've still got to do something about those mice. Definitely mothballs, mouse traps and plugging the tail pipes. They love air filters, heating ducts, under the intake manifold, the glove compartment, anyplace that's private for them. And they will ruin wiring, upholstery, manuals, etc.

We had a Mondial come in plugged so solid with mice and bird seed that the engine would not start untill we removed the muffler. I cut the muffler open and dug out a big pile of seed and 10 mice that had died from the gasoline fumes from the owner trying to start the engine for so long.

I'll second the above on traps. Go to the hardware store and get a bagfull of 50 cent traps. Place them around the car, especially near wheels. Check and reset them every morning until there are no more bodies. This is very effective.

Seems like a spare muffler in the garage might be the perfect mousetrap!

If you can find it, there is a glue-type mouse trap in a tube. Spread it on a bnoard and put some food in the middle. Better than the snap traps in my experience.

I had the experience of squirrels nesting in a Ghibli Cup airbox. The box was full of acorns and bits. Needless to say the car didn't start, so the rodent must have been tampering with some other stuff as well.

Re - the exhaust, a good idea from a mate of mine is simply to put spraycan tops over such open parts. Check out the photo below of the carbs on his (road legal) Volpi-Cadillac V16 racer:

Thanks for all the good advice and the piece of mind regarding the exhaust. Looks like I have some mouse hunting to do!

    Great topic.

You send in a cat to get the mouse, then you'll need, say, a dog to get the cat out, then you'll need, say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You get it?

    Really, Interesting topic.

OK my trick is put a package of Decon in the car and then also put a sheet of Bounce (landry product) in the front and rear. I do usually run the car once a week so no gerble's up the tail pipe. Havn't seen mice since I started doing this. Also place Decon in the garage just to ward off the little guys. Enjoy the ride

His car was already de-catted. Probably a bad move, in hindsight.
