I'm a fan of Viggo Mortenson (LOTR, Eastern Promises, etc.) and went to see this movie because of his apparently stellar starring role and the father-son theme of the storyline.

While Viggo was fantastic, I left incredibly depressed and saw absolutely no redemptive qualities in it whatsoever. I will clarify and say that my religious beliefs lend me to a hope in God that, in such a horrific situation, would intellectually/spiritually/emotionally free humanity from the negative, cannibalistic mindsets visualized in the movie. Instead Viggo and his son are forced to rely on a happy notion of humanity that doesn't exist until the end of the movie and that is also dying (extinguishing planet theme).

Anyone else have thoughts? Maybe I missed some hope somewhere...

And no worries--I had an extra sweet caramel macchiato afterwards that cheered me right up. :D

Haven't seen the movie, read the book though. And the book made me feel the same way the movie made you feel. So do I submit myself for a sure beating and see the movie? I probably will...

Pure Cormac McCarthy...if you read the book before going you would have known how dark the story line is. While the movie took some liberties it was a fairly accurate portrayal.

When my wife and I went to see the movie an early 30's couple sat down in front of us joking that they had no idea what they were in for. I leaned forward and asked if they were serious? The husband said it was their "Christmas date" while the kids were shopping with Grandma and the wife wanted to go see "Precious" but he didn't want to see a depressing "chick flick"...I just laughed. When the movie ended he turned and said "well, it wasn't a chick flick!"

To me the "bright" spot is the love of the father for his son, and that no matter how bad things get not all people are evil...there are good people "carrying the fire".

I thought it was a great movie. Dark, yes, but the overarching message was hope against all odds. Carrying the Fire was a metaphor for not letting the darkness and evil drag humanity down. Like all of Mcarthy's books/movies, a lot of spirtual, good vs evil implications.

I also thought there were a lot of similarities to Children of Men, which came out a few years ago, about hope in a hopeless world.

    Go see it...very well done.

Charlize does a great job the limited amount you see of her.

Sorry for the "Necromancer bump".... the book is better IMO. The movie
takes too many liberties and dilutes the purity of the book.

The best "post apocalyptic" book I've read... and I've read a LOT of them.

    :)
