Well this is my first post on here so bear with me.
My name is Andrew Adams, i'm just 19 but have big plans. I'm going to be going to I.E.D. (for transportation design) in a year and a half from now in Turin. I was just wondering what it is like there.....the culture, the food, and most importantly the cars (shows, factories). thanks alot for any help.

You'll love living in Italy, as long as you put up with the irritating bureaucracy and some inefficient public services.

Culture: loads of it! :) Young Italians nowadays are very similar to their American counterparts for fashion and music tastes. You'll also find that the most cultured young Italians are well travelled and most have visited the US (usually NY, California, Yellowstone, you know...) at least once in their lives. Make sure you visit Tuscany (Siena, Firenze), Rome, Milan, Modena :) as well as the Alps and the mediterranean coast (portofino, cinque terre, etc.) during your stay. Better still, get an Italian girlfriend that can show you around the best of Italy!

Food: Torino is very near the famed "Barolo" and "Alba", where some of the world's finest wines are produced (Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo...). Around these towns you can also find some of the best restaurants in Italy. The region is also famous for its "Chianina" beef - excellent for making the typically north American thick, juicy grilled steaks. A typical dinner of risotto with porcini (mushrooms), grilled steak and Barolo wine is an experience not to be missed.

Cars: you won't see many nice cars on the road, most owners keep them hidden away :( However there are lots of classic events and races. Buy Ruoteclassiche, Automobilismo d'Epoca and Autosprint magazines for information on what's on. There are some great museums: the Alfa Romeo museum in Arese (near Milan), the Ferrari museum in Maranello, the Maranello Rosso collection in S. Marino... Also, every year in March there is the Geneva Auto Show, Europe's most important new car show. It's not very far from Torino.

    Good luck!

And of course in Turin the Lingotto factory. It's offices now, but still a part of european automotive history.

I think there's Fiat's museum there, too. Is that right? I also heard that Pininfarina organize guided tours of their "holy shrines" from time to time...

Welcome in my country then! I also suggest you the Motor Show in Bologna, usually it takes place in december, early days.

Yes I have heard of it! It's the BEST college in the world for anyone aspiring to become a professional automotive designer. It's the best way to get hired by Pininfarina, Italdesign or any other major design house. You'd better plan to learn italian fluently - you may end up staying a lot longer than the duration of your course!

    Good luck!
