Most likely moving to northern jersey within the next 1-2 months because of work. Any advice on a decent place to live?

Open to anywhere in N. Jersey, or Westchester/Rockland county, NY. Will prob rent for a year before looking to buy, so I can scope the area. Thx

NJ taxes and cost of living sucks (only beaten out by NYC and maybe parts of Ct), but you're in or close to strong job markets in NJ and NYC (thus your income potential is probably higher on a dollar basis)- it all depends on what you want though. NJ offers everything from exciting areas by the city (Hoboken, etc), residential with great schools (do you have kids?), urban, rural farm land, beach areas- it's not a huge state but has huge options. If I hit the lottery and didn't have to commute I'd probably move out to Mendham- the commute was just that much too far for me when we looked at some places out there years ago before we bought our house.

Things to remember- it's close to lots of jobs either in NJ or NYC (you're moving for your current job, but you'll probably have good career options in this region depending on your industry- the job market is important for resale as well).

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by renting and researching, but your question is too general regarding what you are looking for given the options in the state...

No kids... young and single. I don't mind a commute, as I will be on the road quite a bit for work. Not necessarily the city, but a territory that covers northern NJ, and rockland/orange county NY.

I don't mind finding an apt to rent for a year, as long as it's in a decent area. I've heard a lot about Morristown and may check out the area on the next trip. Only problem is parking... would love to find a place that offered garage parking even if I have to pay extra.

Morristown is a great area- right by major highways, train station, great night life, very nice town, and lots of rental apartment options (Probably some with parking as well). A great place to live in your situaion. It's also only 10 minutes from our C&C car meets (every other weekend) in Chatham :)

Check out the Highlands in Morristown. They have a massive parking garage in the building. The way the have it built is that you can drive to your floor, open a door from the garage and be in your hallway.

I think its towards the high side in terms of monthly costs. Give it a look.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will definitely check them out. I will receive a relocation package so maybe I can negotiate on the price by paying so many months up front.

where to move depends on where you will be working...

If you will be working in NYC then most towns along the Hudson. The commute is easier ...

    Nick,

Where are you going to be working? That makes a big difference where you want to live. Rush hour commuting in and around New York/Northern NJ can be a real hassle, depending on which direction your are going, which roads you are on, or which commuter rail line or bus you are taking. At rush hour, morning or evening, a drive that might take 20 minutes at off-peak times can easily turn into well over an hour at peak traffic. And road construction can turn any drive into a nightmare.

So, if you give us an idea where you will be working, suggestions on where to live might be more meaningful.
